What are some scales that Dave Murray and Adrian Smith from Iron Maiden use a lot. Don't the use a lot of modes? When I try to improvise over their music I have trouble using the 3 scales I know (minor pentatonic, minor, phrygian mode).

minor pentatonic and natural minor mostly.

Sounds about right. Natural minor is the Aeolian Mode, right?

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

TS: Yeah. The natural minor is used a lot, probably built around the pentatonic, with maybe a few other scales mixed in.

But mainly natural minor.

pretty much all natural minor (mostly in E, quite often in D, sometimes other keys)
you may just be confused because they are playing in different positions

IIRC, they mainly use pentatonic and natural minor. The other scales are used often, but not as often as natural minor. But still used.

They use the major scale and its modes as well

Phrygian for example in the Wickerman solo

The signature Maiden lead style is all natural minor, sure they use bits of other stuff but if you want to sound like them then you'd use the minor scale.
