Hey all, I want you to suggest me some socially conscious songs that you find have a powerful meaning. I'm doing a project, and it's kind of outlining differences between socially conscious and not socially conscious music.

For example, I'll be using System of a Down alot, and posting their lyrics on my project, but at the same time I want a juxtaposition of something like "Soulja Boy" beside it, so I can make a comparison between the two. (Not saying it needs to be Soulja Boy, but you know...)

It would go something like this:

System of a Down - Sad Statue

"What is in us that turns a deaf ear to the cries of human suffering?"

Soulja Boy - Crank That (Dat? Hell, I don't know)

"...Superman dat ho!"

So yeah, any suggestions would be great, and if you want, even suggest the least socially conscious songs you know. It's much obliged.

Use System of a Down, and Serj Tankian, A LOT. I'm thinking something along the lines of, " We are the cause of a world that's gone wrong, Civilization is over! elect the dead" beside some kind of song about like racial hate and the such,
#4
Try Protest the Hero - Spoils

Its about how humans are so arrogant as to classify every living thing into a scientific name thing (not saying i exactly agree but its still a cool song) and how we use language to get past lonliness and how words can never truly express what we really feel.
#5
Alright fellas, keep 'em coming. I was definitely going to use RATM and you say PtH is good, so maybe I'll look into that.

I was thinking old classics too. Definitely gonna use some John Lennon or The Beatles...any other thoughts for old classics?

rap music like Soulja boy is a great example, as the working class lack of social conscious (that they are not aware of a class society)

i suggest, Scroobius Pip- "a letter from god to man"

SOAD- "iBoom!"

in terms of the environment SerjTankian's solo stuff?

The Cribs- "man's needs" anti-lad society song

U2-"bloody Sunday"

and beatles- bangladesh

Ha hah
You know the deal
It's just me yo
Beats by Su-Primo for all of my peoples, negroes and latinos
and even the gringos

Yo, check it one for Charlie Hustle, two for Steady Rock
Three for the fourth comin live, future shock
It's five dimensions, six senses
Seven firmaments of heaven to hell, 8 Million Stories to tell
Nine planets faithfully keep in orbit
with the probable tenth, the universe expands length
The body of my text posess extra strength
Power-liftin powerless up, out of this, towerin inferno
My ink so hot it burn through the journal
I'm blacker than midnight on Broadway and Myrtle
Hip-Hop past all your tall social hurdles
like the nationwide projects, prison-industry complex
Broken glass wall better keep your alarm set
Streets too loud to ever hear freedom sing
Say evacuate your sleep, it's dangerous to dream
but you chain cats get they CHA-POW, who dead now
Killin fields need blood to graze the cash cow
It's a number game, but **** don't add up somehow
Like I got, sixteen to thirty-two bars to rock it
but only 15% of profits, ever see my pockets like
sixty-nine billion in the last twenty years
spent on national defense but folks still live in fear like
nearly half of America's largest cities is one-quarter black
That's why they gave Ricky Ross all the crack
Sixteen ounces to a pound, twenty more to a ki
A five minute sentence hearing and you no longer free
40% of Americans own a cell phone
so they can hear, everything that you say when you ain't home
I guess, Michael Jackson was right, "You Are Not Alone"
Rock your hardhat black cause you in the Terrordome
full of hard niggaz, large niggaz, dice tumblers
Young teens and prison greens facin life numbers
Crack mothers, crack babies and AIDS patients
Young bloods can't spell but they could rock you in PlayStation
This new math is whippin mother****ers ass
You wanna know how to rhyme you better learn how to add
It's mathematics

Chorus: scratched by DJ Premier (repeat 2X)

"The Mighty Mos Def.."
"It's simple mathematics" -> Fat Joe
"Check it out!"
"I revolve around science.."
"What are we talking about here?"

.. "Do your math" -> Erykah Badu (2X) ..
.. "One.. t-t-two.. three, four" -> James Brown ..
.. "What are we talking about here?" ..

[Mos Def]
Yo, it's one universal law but two sides to every story
Three strikes and you be in for life, manditory
Four MC's murdered in the last four years
I ain't tryin to be the fifth one, the millenium is here
Yo it's 6 Million Ways to Die, from the seven deadly thrills
Eight-year olds gettin found with 9 mill's
It's 10 P.M., where your seeds at? What's the deal
He on the hill puffin krill to keep they belly filled
Light in the ass with heavy steel, sights on the pretty **** in life
Young soldiers tryin to earn they next stripe
When the average minimum wage is $5.15
You best believe you gotta find a new ground to get cream
The white unemployment rate, is nearly more than triple for black
so frontliners got they gun in your back
Bubblin crack, jewel theft and robbery to combat poverty
and end up in the global jail economy
Stiffer stipulations attached to each sentence
Budget cutbacks but increased police presence
And even if you get out of prison still livin
join the other five million under state supervision
This is business, no faces just lines and statistics
from your phone, your zip code, to S-S-I digits
The system break man child and women into figures
Two columns for who is, and who ain't niggaz
Numbers is hardly real and they never have feelings
but you push too hard, even numbers got limits
Why did one straw break the camel's back? Here's the secret:
the million other straws underneath it - it's all mathematics

Chorus

{closing scratch} "Mathematics.."
"Why should we subsidise intellectual curiosity?"
-Ronald Reagan

"Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public happiness."
-George Washington

I was hoping to be taken seriously, but that seems to have failed.

Tis tradition, sir.

Socially conscious songs are boring and preachy. The most socially conscious of them all Pete Seeger.

That's fine if you think that, but they aren't all preachy, really. I'm not saying they're always the best songs, but sometimes they really give people something to think about.

Mista Nigga is better, I'd say. About racism, some great verses in there.

Say ho everybody say ho
bop po quay yo
I said shake your soul like way back in the day yo
bop po quay yo everybody say ho
Everybody say hooooo hooo
Everybody say ho
And check it out now

Who is cat eating out on the town
And make the whole dining room turn they head around
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
He got the speakers in the trunk
With the bass on pump(?)
Who be riding up in the highrise elevator
Other tenants who be praying they ain't the new neighbor
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
They try to play him like a chump
Cause he got what they want

He under thirty years old
But already he's a pro
Designer trousers slung low
Because his pockets stay swoll'
Could afford to get up and be anywhere he go
VIP at the club, backstage at the show
(Yes y'all) the best crib, the best clothes
Hottest whips on the road
Neck and wrists on froze (say word)
Checks with O's o-o-o-o-ohs
Straight all across the globe
Watch got three time-zones
Keep a digital phone up to his dome
Two assistants
Two bank accounts, two homes
One problem
Even with the O's on his check
The po-po stop him and show no respect
"Is there a problem officer?"
Damn straight, it's called race
That motivate the jake (woo-woo) to give chase
Say they want you successful, but that ain't the case
You livin large, your skin is dark
They flash a light in your face

Now, who is cat dining out on the town
Me'tradie wanna take a whole year to sit him down
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
He got the speakers in the trunk
With the bass on pump(?)
Now, who is the cat at Armani buying wears
With the tourists who be asking him, do you work here?
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
Nigga Nigga

Yo, the Abstract with the Mighty Mos Def
White folks got it muffled across beneath they breathe
"I didn't say it.."
But they'll say it out loud again
When they deal with their close associates and friends
You know
Sneak it in with they friends at the job
Happy hour at the bar
While this song is in they car
And even if they've never said it, lips stay sealed
Their actions reveal how their hearts really feel
Like, late night I'm on a first class flight
The only brother in sight
The flight attendent catch fright
I sit down in my seat, 2C
She approach officially talking about, "Excuse me"
Her lips curl up into a tight space
She don't believe that I'm in the right place
Showed her my boarding pass,
And then she sort of gasped
All embarrassed put an extra lime in my water glass
An hour later here she comes by walking past
"I hate to be a pest but my son would love your autograph"

They stay on Nigga patrol on american roads
And when you travel abroad they got world Nigga laws
Some folks get on a plane go as they please
But I go over seas and I get over siezed
London-Heathro, me and my people
They think that illegal's a synonym for Negro
Far away places, customs agents flagrant
They think the dark face is smuggle waiting in cases
Bags inspected, now we arrested
Attention directed to contents of our intestines
Urinanalyis followed by X-rays
Interegated and detained to damn near the next day
No evidence, no appology and no regard
Even for the big american rap star
For us especially, us most especially,
A Mr Nigga VIP jail cell just for me
"If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake
Just got some shoe-polish, painted my face"
They say they want you successful
But then they make it stressful
You start keeping pace, they start shaking up the tempo

Now, who is cat riding out on the town
State trooper want to stop in his ride, pat him down
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
He got the speakers in the trunk
With the bass on pump(?)
Now, who is the cat with the hundred dollar bill
They gotta send it to the back to make sure the **** is real
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
Nigga Nigga Nigga

You can laugh and criticize Michael Jackson if you wanna
Woody Allen, molested and married his step-daughter
Same press kicking dirt on Michael's name
Show Woody and Soon-Ye at the playoff game, holding hands
Sit back and just bug, think about that
Would he get that type of dap if his name was Woody Black?
OJ found innocent by a jury of his peers
They been fucking with that Nigga for last five years
Is it fair, is it equal, is it just, is it right?
Do they do the same shit when the defendent face is white?
If white boys doing it, well, it's success
When I start doing, well, it's suspect
Don't hate me, my folks is poor, I just got money
America's five centuries deep in cotton money
You see a lot of brothers caked up, yo straight up
It's new, Y'all living off of slave traders paper
But I'm a live though, yo I'm a live though
Putting up the big swing for my kids yo
Got my mom the fat water-front crib yo
I'm a get her them pretty bay windows
I'm a cop a nice home to provide in
A safe environment for seeds to reside in
A fresh whip for my whole family to ride in
And if I'm still Mr Nigga, I won't find it suprising

It actually reminds me of the same tone Dylan took in some of his songs

What about some of Bob Dylan's very early stuff? Clichéd social awareness I know, but still a very good example. It will also add variety to your project.

To the list, I'd add:

Sage Francis - Crumble

Ben Harper - Excuse me Mr

Talkin' 'bout the science of social deprevation
From 'ere to whereever in the council estates the mans is strugglin'.
The poor lower working class.

Blud, you got to sleep round here and have nightmares,
Wake up and find the worst reality is right there.
The difference is, in my dream's I'm always runnin' scared,
But in reality, on road, I'm comin' prepared.
So now who's gonna wanna run up and become a gonner?
Everybody's gonna wanna get us, but they're on a longers.
I'm still out to get the same cats from last summer,
But man can't see them again,
It's like they've done a runner.
I'm still in the same mannor, on the same number
And everybody knows where I'm at and what I'm under,
I'm in the same slums, raisin' the funds.
In the city where the yute man are blazin' the guns.
Just look how this United Kingdom has come,
Within the council estates where man'll fight over crumbs,
We got young single parent mums,
Havin' the hardest time tryn'a survive for their daughters and their sons
Be comin' out their yutes, cause their yutes are left out there,
Raised on the ways of these streets without care.
Now we're havin' our fair share of gun warefare
And it's all gone nuts and that's just cause it's poor here.
People want more here,
We're all on the floor here,
It's raw here, can't even sleep and ignore here,
Cause life's kinda militant,
Stuck in the grime,
Nothin's equivalent to this council estate of mind.

We know that we have been living our lives through the hardest times,
Still we know that we must keep up the faith in our hearts and minds.

I live amongst smashed syringes,
Squatters' doors hangin' off the hinges,
Hookers lookin' money for Bobby, shottin' their minges.
Leavin' used condoms out on the staircases,
Next to the broken pipes that's left by the Base Heads.
Local estate heads, have grown up to hate Feds,
Kids with no helmets drivin' round on some bait peds.
Abandoned cars are at the bottom of the block,
So when it's pissin' down,
Kids have got a place to plot,
To cotch and blaze pot,
And watch this whole spot,
Full up of lost souls with no goals who get left to rot.
And what, I don't expect you to ever comprehend is
Why I got all actin' so self defensive.
The neighbourhood shotters have all seen what it's comin' to.
Local coppers on patrol are boppin' with a gun too.
So anyone could bun you,
Leave and desert you.
How long they gonna mourn you when somebody mercs you?
Tryin' not to get shift when shiftin' your work true
When you wanna shift there ain't nowhere to splurt to.
The stakes are high, still the best get placed.
Tryn'a find how sweet success might taste.
In a place where everybody is tryin' to flex.
Nobody's really gettin' anywhere,
So everybody's vexed,
Livin' life kinda militant,
Stuck in the grime,
Nothin's equivalent to this council estate of mind.

We know that we have been living our lives through the hardest times,
Still we know that we must keep up the faith in our hearts and minds.

So these are lyrics for my people,
Livin' on the streets who,
Know they ain't got nuttin' else to retreat to.
If you gettin' food next man'll wanna eat you,
Pure, bad beefs just to get to delete you.
So many man nowadays are so see-through,
Beware of their deceitful ways when the greet you.
Those who feel it know it because they've been through,
Times when their friends wanna switch up to beat you.
I never used to see it but,
Now I got a clear view,
Don't let no bad minded heads try get near you.
If they're not on your level they'll never hear you
Ain't no time to be shaken or fearful.
If you've been through, some of this evil that we do,
A hundred Hail Mary's ain't enough to redeem you.
All of my long time friends are crack fiends,
Who have gone too far, but still say they didn't mean too.
Does alleviation through base and crack relieve you?
Everybody's losin' their mind
And even me too.
Step into my world if you wanna catch a preview,
But don't tell a soul, cause they just won't believe you.
The life's kinda militant,
Stuck in the grime,
Nothin's equivalent to this council estate of mind.
Life's kinda militant,
Stuck in the grime,
Nothin's equivalent to this council estate of mind.

We know that we have been living our lives through the hardest times,
Still we know that we must keep up the faith in our hearts and minds.
We know that we have been living our lives through the hardest times,
Still we know that we must keep up the faith in our hearts and minds.

Well obviously a lot of punk is socially conscious. Get some folk punk or something.
I'm the same as I was when I was six years old
And oh my god I feel so damn old
I don't really feel anything
