I would like to re-finish my carvin cause I dont really like black and there is no way I would let anyone exept carvin do it. So I called them up and they said it would be $400 for any finish.. what do you think the DC-145 would look best in (THERE IS NO FIGURED TOP)

Pic of it currently black:

Gah, I'm so used to Carvins being quilted I didn't consider that.

What about a whiteburst? Or even a silverburst?

Like on that one, where it is white in the middle, and bursts out to a different color.

What is the body wood? It may look really good with a translucent blue, purple, or emerald color.

These are whiteburst to black.

IMHO, though, you'd probably be most satisfied with a translucent finish.

I've never actually seen a dragonburst without a quilt or flame top, because I don't think they offer it for a plain top, but the quilt/flame allows it to smoothly phase between the colors.
Imagine this without the quilt.

I'd personally go with a translucent finish.

No. Dragonburst is multi-colored, and I think they'd only do it for quilt/flame tops, plus it's their most expensive finish, which I believe your $400 quote wouldn't cover.

http://www.carvinguitars.com/wood_finish/ You have the standard/metallic/translucent options. The reason they look like that is because they stain the quilt/flame figure black to really stand out, then they do the dragonburst, which gives it that intense effect. It wouldn't look near as impressive on a standard top. But if you get a translucent finish, you can at least see the wood grain through the finish. Their standard colors are pretty plain, so I'd try and get a translucent finish.

You can look through www.carvinmuseum.com and see what you like.

Edit: Where did you hear they offer dragonburst on standard tops?

It's really up to you, man. I personally think it would be difficult to transition between the green and blue without it looking silly, but if you like it, then go for it.

You should ask them if they have any pictures of it done on plain tops. I'd be interested to see them.
