I've been playin for about a year now. I am really into Steve Vai. I am tryin to improve my chord knowledge so if you guys in your infinate wisdom could give me some really really essential chords that people like Steve Vai, Joe Sartriani, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert etc.... use.

My chord knowledge stops at about A7 E7, Am7 Em7

could you give a diagram, a list of the notes in it and an example of a chord progression it could be used in.

diminished chords a half-step behind the tonic create great harmonic tension and releif when resolved to the tonic
