For my birthday this year, I asked my parents if they could get me a record player, mainly because my audiophilic tendencies are growing and vinyl sounds way better to me. Anyway, they asked me to make a list of possible records I would want in addition to the player, and I came up with:

Dark Side of the Moon; Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
In Rainbows; OK Computer - Radiohead
anything Bob Marley or released on Trojan Records
Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
A Love Supreme - John Coltrane
Amputechture - The Mars Volta
In the Court of the Crimson King; In The Wake of Poseidon - King Crimson
Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
Abbey Road; Sgt. Pepper's - The Beatles
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips

So my question for you, UG, is this: What are some records you think it's pretty much essential to own? I'm open to pretty much every musical style there is, preferably prog-rock, dub reggae, jazz or classical, but I pride myself on having a really eclectic taste. So shoot away.

Both excellent choices.

Also try some Bob Dylan.

The Wall. Hendrix Experiance's Are You Experianced?, if you can find it. Houses of the Holy, if you like it. Maybe some Wes Montgomery, something new like Coheed and Cambria's Good Apollo II, if you like prog. Rush's 21:12?

EDIT: Let's add Axis: Bold as Love, some SRV, can't name any albums tho, London Calling from The Clash, and Never mind the Bollocks from The Sex Pistols.

Just a few suggestions.

You might want to check out any used music stores we have one here that has tons of records for cheap and I got like 100 at the salvation army for $25 after spending a half hour going through all the ones they had and picking out good ones.

Frampton Comes Alive!

My dad threw that on last week, I've never been over to someone's house where their parents didn't own that record.

But where?

I can't find it.

Ebay had it for like $25, as well as a bunch of EPs.

As for the other suggestions, I'm feeling Pet Sounds, Londing Calling, Boston, Bold as Love, and TEINACDP. I already have all of those sans Boston on CD though, so I might hold off on those till later.

Keep the suggestions coming, and thanks to all those that have answers.

"Australasia"- Pelican

Of course, I don't own any of these (yet), but they're essential on my list of thigns to buy.

Along with tons of other vinyl (mostly stuff made from 1990 onward).

A lot of 90s indie/emo albums would be awesome to own on vinyl. A lot of them cost a lot now though, because some can get pretty rare. Pretty much everything is cooler on vinyl.

Yeah, a lot of people don't realise how expensive and rare some vinyl from the 90s can be.

Like trying to find Coalesce's "0:12 Revolution in Just Listening" on colored vinyl is almost impossible.

And, I agree, vinyl is just cooler.

Yeah, 90s vinyl can be pretty damn expensive. Even some rare vinyl from the '00s is expensive. Brand New's Your Favorite Weapon goes for over $150 sometimes on vinyl and it's hard to find.

I have the entire Led Zeppelin discography on vinyl, almost every Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Rush, and Clapton, along with every Styx, almost every Aerosmith, Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back", and "Surfing With The Alien" by Joe Satriani.

Yet, somehow, my collection will not be worth anything until I can find "Badmotorfinger" by Soundgarden and "Pretty Hate Machine" by Nine Inch Nails. These 2 are necessities; to me, at least.

I have a good bit of vinyl, but 2 that really stand out and I would hate to lose or scratch are Ted Nugent's "Double Live Gonzo!" and Elliott Smith's "Either/Or". They're glorious.

I have Double Live Gonzo!, but I've never really listened to it. Never really felt the urge.

I know, when my uncle feels that the time is right, he's givin me his original copy of the Star Wars soundtrack on vinyl.

Mint condition, rarely played, and all original, vintage 1977.

Has anyone noticed that people who tend to like vinyl also tend to have way more broadminded music tastes than those that favor CDs/mp3's?

I mean someone suggested Ted Nugent and Elliot Smith in the same post, and another suggested both Public Enemy and Joe Satriani. All four are worthy choices, btw.

Thanks to all.

Rush - 2112 (I got all their studio/early live albums on vinyl)
Yes - Close To The Edge
John Mayers Continuum is pretty good on vinyl

Prince, The Cult, Ray Charles, Cream
