What is the safe way to raise the action on an Epiphone Custom Les Paul for jazz?

de-string it (for optimum safety), and then use a screwdriver...simple, no???? and just try a few heights that suit you...

Don't really even need to destring it. Just deepen the strings with the pegs then raise the action. No real need to take the strings off.
