D7 has a flat seven and is a dominant chord (strong pull back to I). Dmaj7 has a major seven.

D9, D11 and so on are all dominant chords as well?

edit:

and is D9 a flatted ninth in addition to the flatted 7th??

Just to get into a little bit more info:

Remember that chords are a stacking of thirds.
Maj7: Maj Min Maj
Min7: Min Maj Min
Dom7: Maj Min Min

You can also see them as a combination of intervals
Maj7: Maj 3rd, Maj 7th
Min7: Min 3rd, Min 7th
Dom7: Maj 3rd, Min 7th

EDIT: sorry didn't see your last post: Yes, without the designators min, maj, sus, etc...it will be a dominant chord. No, only the b7 in your D9.

its pretty confusing, but here... if there was a flat nine it would be called D7(b9)... so D9 is just D7 with an added 9. same applies to the others.

is the D7 chord this then? D, F, G#, B
Nope. Remember stack the thirds.

1)Start with D now count up a Major third (three whole steps). D..E..F#.

2)Then from F#, count up a minor third (2 wholes steps, 1 half step). F#..G...A

3)Then from A, another minor third. A..B...C

Notice how they're all thirds?(DEF - FGA - ABC)

You end up with D, F#, A, C. You have yourself a D7.

Yes but for the puropses of playing guitar you may want to miss out some notes like the 5th or 9th, otherwise it might be too difficult to play.

Whats d50?
huh? was that in reference to a chord? because if it was, I've never seen it. Off the top of my head, maybe a D chord with the 5th ommited? But only an idiot would write it like that.
