I have a Marshall mg15cdr which I no longer use. Would it be possible to add a 1/4" socket at the back to use it as a speaker cabinet? Would this wiring diagram work?

No. You must disconnect the old amplifier from the speaker. If you don't the signal from the new amplifier will be sent to the circuits in the old amp in addition to being sent to the speaker. This might cause damage to BOTH amplifiers, even if the old amp is not switched on.

So if I put and spst switch between the positive wire of the old amp and the speaker it will be fine?

Just disconnect the amp from the speaker keeps you from forgetting to set the switch and having an amp problem. Other than that yea it would work.
