Finally decided on an amp.

It was between this and the fender 1966 blackface super reverb.
But, while I was there at the store, another person was trying it out, and it started crackling and feeding back like crazy with the volume knob at above practice volumes, and I think I smelled a bit of smoke. I think there was something wrong with the speakers too since when I played it (before it fizzled out when the other person tried it), whenever i'd play at above 5 volume with any decent amount of bass (even with the tone knobs at 5), it would mud up and everything was messed up. I'm glad I didn't go with SR.
I have no clue what happened.
But... that just means I was meant for the Chicago Blues Box.
Anyways, I really like this amp. It has sovtek KT66's in the power section at the moment. They're alright for now (and the amp is already head and shoulders over my JJ-packed Peavey Classic), but is there any tube you can recommend that I put in?
I was thinking JJ 6l6's, but would I have to rebias? and how do you think I would go about rebiasing? Also, I think the bias is set a little on the cold side on this amp, which I want to raise up a bit. Will this mess anything up?
Anyways, I have 2 days to see if I want to keep this amp, so tell me if it sounds good!

Here's some pics, since I know how you UGers like your pr0n:

If only my parents would let me get a new amp...cause I'm stuck with a valvestate. Mind you, I have 500 bucks, so I can't get this, nor does it suit my style. But still, nice looking amp.

Well, I don't think the tubes were stock.
I think they come with 6L6's originally. If the amp already rocks with sovteks, I can't wait to see it with JJ's or Tungsols.

They're up!
It's like a 13 MB Mp3, with dialup that uploads at 3 kb a second.
That's why it took long.

They're on my profile!
I talk alot. Be warned.
The last 2 minutes when i'm just talking about the amp, I was just rambling on.
But, I do play the amp with alot of different settings.

I just played clean with the trem and reverb.
It nails EJ's Manhattan tone instantly. Minus a few things though.
This is a HUGE sounding amp. It has 3 dimensional cleans and great semi dirty tone. The really overdriven tones may have a bit too much treble, but i'll get JJ's or Tungsols to fix that up.

^It's 4 by 10.
I may have said it wrong though in the video. I was improvving it.

The speakers have a pretty big sound though. What my next step is, is that I need to find a good power tube type/brand to even out the highs and make it's cranked tones a bit darker and smoother. But, since it's only 2 tubes, it won't cost much at all!

Glad that the amp is a hit.
Just for a general vote... Should I replace the tubes for something a bit more...not sovtek?
I've always disliked sovtek tubes, but I didn't care that it came stock with them.
It's like what, 30 bucks to switch them out?
Think I should go for it?

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I have to defend one of my favorite amps.

It's an old amp. Those kind of problems are to be expected if it hasn't been serviced recently. It's actually an achievement for it to work at all, really.

Nice amp!
#32
oh good, you got it. when the title said "i got the blues" i thought someone else snatched it before you did.
#33
^Yeah.
But, although the cleans on the BF were better, the blues box had the best inbetween tone from clean and overdriven. Plus, the picking dynamics are *much* better on the BB.
The BB, apparently with the right tubes it's just like a blackface on steroids (I've emailed a few owners and they said this). But, it has sovteks in it right now, so the tone suffers a bit. But, 40 bucks to get a nice set of power tubes is worth it.

If you have the cash, swap out as many brands as you can afford, but you better learn to re-bias yourself so you don't have to go to a tech every time!
I will LMAO though, if you wind up going back to the Sovteks!

Yeah, I just finished listening to the clips, & it really does sound great. Awesome blues tone right out of the gate. I really liked the first clip w/ all settings neutral. Dang smooth. I agree about the slight over-treble-ness when driven really hard, but maybe rolling off the presence & treble a bit might smooth that out? Have fun experimenting, but man, that has some sweet blues tone!

^Thanks. Well, the in-between clean and overdriven tone is very good IMO.
when driven hard, there is some treble, that's why I want to go for some darker sounding tubes. Even rolling off the presence and treble really doesn't help TOO much. I can roll down the treble all the way, but that just sounds muffled.
The cleans and slight overdrive make up for it though.
Oh, and the trem and reverb *drools*
