There has been much discussion in the pit over whether the US is a democracy or a republic. I thought I'd create a poll to settle things over.

Yes, I know theres a political thread. But you can't make a poll in the political thread so it would be hard to compare what people thought.

It is a Republic. Duh.

Constitutionally it's a federal republic. Currently in practice it's a unitary republic. And if someone says it's a "democratic republic" I might go and shoot myself. That's like saying a frozen tundra or a powerful cold front. There's never been a republic that hasn't functioned using democratic processes.

Republic.

"And to the republic, for which it stands".

I don't like the pledge all that much, because I don't enjoy blind loyalty, but that's the most basic place you can find it.

A republic uses a democratic system to elect representatives to make policy.

A democracy uses referendums to directly decide policy.

There are certain instances where the states employ direct democracy, but the country itself is a republic.

We say we are a democracy, when we really are MOSTLY a republic with some democracy in there.

From dictionary.com:
Republic-a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.

It's a federal republic.

Hit the nail on the head...by traditional definition, its a republic...the closest we have to *PURE* democracy is the swiss....which is a wicked political system

kay?

A federal republic is different than a straight republic in the fact that each state is it's own governing body. Twas why the Civil War was fought, to some degree.

Currently though (my own commentary) the federal government is outstepping it's boundaries in many areas and is committing many unconstitutional acts by infringing on state's rights.

^ Still a republic. The U.S. is really both, actually. A republic is a specific system of government while democracy is a more general kind of regime. A federal republic is a kind of democracy.

"Majority rule" is a major principle of democracy, though many democratic systems do not adhere to this strictly—representative democracy is more common than direct democracy, and minority rights are often protected from what is sometimes called "the tyranny of the majority". Popular sovereignty is common but not a universal motivating philosophy for establishing a democracy.

Jesus, Mary and Buddha, a republic is a type of democracy, an indirect one. That is like, 7th grade social science. Stop smoking the reefer and go to class.

I said what it is 4 times.

Don't pay attention to me. I'm an inbred idiot that has a big fat crusty penis for a head. Also, I'm a moron that has nothing better to do than make multiple accounts because I got banned for not following the rules the first time, and I'm an asshat with absolutely no life other than to come here and spam because it makes me cool.
