Well I'm not one to usually sulk my life to the internet but something really got me down.

I'm doing terrible at school (30% class rank, 2.62 GPA) as a Sophomore in High School. Hopefully the weighted Honors Classes come into play at the end of the day. But I did a college search and I could only see a future with doing Computer Graphics or Special Effects Technician because my dad had a copy of Adobe CS3 Master Collection at work for his company so I've been working like crazy with that mostly Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere.

Now I understand throwing myself out here is going to inevitably lead to me getting trashed and I'm prepared for that.

But what exactly can I do at this point? I'm working harder and I've talked to my guidance counselor but all she does is tell me how much I'm sucking at school and feels that calling my parents will do something. It hasn't done anything.

I've had a great oppertunity handed to me growing up in an area filled with chances. My dad says that the things I want to do won't bring in money but frankly I see no other option at this point.

tl;dr? Basically I'm sucking at school and can I make a decent living off of doing something along the lines of being a Special Effects Technician?

There's plenty of courses outside of school anyway so don't worry if you fail school.

Welcome to life.

I too want to do all these cool things but they pay nothing. Hence why I rot in a ****ing cubicle all day working for THE MAN. DAMN THE MAN!

Student in second year of high school.

TS, if your school is anything like mine, the Honors classes do play a big part in your role. The only thing you can really do is try to improve your grades. My guidance counselor last year said that colleges look for positive change. Basically, just get your act together.

Well I've grown up in a rather rich area so usually the only things on peoples minds are money. Including my parents and grandparents, they think I'm some super smart kid cause that's how I try to present myself and I have manners and when I tell my friends of my class rank and GPA they tend to get surprised.

The reason it has me thinking is that guidance counselors were talking to our class and they did some sort of career cruiser thing and I came out to be Special Effects Technician, I know those usually shouldn't be the foundation of looking for a career but they said once you get experienced with it in California(where you would be primarily looking for work I would assume) You could make something like 90,000 dollars median.

well I found out that when they weigh your grades they find your honors classes and it weighs .05 more GPA points and I've taken 5(going to be 8 when next year finishes) because I'm going to be taking an Advanced Computer Graphics class cause my teacher recommended me to do that as my other teachers recommended me for Honors English and History.

2.62? It could be worse. I'm getting either .9 or 1.0...Something like that. Yes. Don't make stupid ass mistakes...It ****s you over BAD...I've learned that by now.

Your still a sophomore, and can still bring up your grade. I'm nearing the end of my Juinor year.

Just keep trying, don't let it get to you. That what I'm doing this year, and I'm doing better! Haha.

(I wonder if I'm going to be considered a retard now...)

Well some majors to look in are Visual effects & motion graphics and Media arts & animation, both pay pretty good and are fun to do

I just found out 10 minutes ago that my grandfather has lung cancer. Please don't complain

dude. do good in school even if it takes 5 months more, or online courses, or summer school. its worth it man.
#18
You could always go to a community college and then transfer to a better school a couple years after. I'm a junior and my GPA is worse then yours. You aren't in as bad shape as you think. And some schools could accept you even if your GPA is ****. Don't give up hope man.

hell if you make a name for yourself you can make decent money. This is where Tom Savini, Greg Nicotero, Sam Raimi, George Romero, and many others got their start and now the make tons of cash! (if you don't know these names that means you don't watch alot of horror movies and that's ok, these guys are among the greatest special effets teams in the world! And Raimi and Romero are directors, Romero just did Diary of the Dead, and Raimi just did Spiderman 3 (I know that's not horror))
Out here you've gotta know where your towel is!

I'm sorry to hear of that, I guess I come off as a bratty teenager thinking the world is going to collapse on me because I don't come to the standards of my cousins who went to private school and get like 3.7-4.0 GPAs and have aspirations to become Lawyers and Doctors and I have no where near the grades to do such things.

If that came off as me being a douchebag I'm sorry. I meant it as though Family pressure is getting to me.

life is nothing but people complaining about things that arnt extremely important, dont try to guilt trip TS, everyone is scared about their future.

Go to community college then transfer to a uni after 2 years. You will end up with the same degree anyway.

I guess I could do that, I live by a really nice community college, one of the best in the states. It's literally walking distance.

I don't really want to start up a small business yet because I grew up with my dad under a small business and there were really rough times for my family and I wouldn't want to do that to myself or to my future spouse.

Become a software engineer, all you need to know is how to program and some logic. Get a few books on computer programming and by the time you finish high school (2 years?) you should be a decent programmer... that's my 2 cents.
#26
Also when I was a sophomore I had a 1.7 gpa and I managed to bring that up to a 2.6 by the time I graduated(not that great but still an improvement.) If you work hard you can get your gpa above a 3.0 easily.

You're a sophmore so just work harder during junior and senior year. Colleges recognize improvement. Just study hard, there's no way around it man. If you want your future to be full of different opportunities and choices all you gotta do is study.
#29
really your options aren't that limited. You can study a variety of things-English, Business, etc. Don't feel like you have to be locked in on a career choice now either. But first if I were you I would go to my guidance counselor and talk to them.

I got Cs in high school. I'm a lawyer. Life isn't all about grades. I hate the American "education" system for turning children into neurotic zombies.

You're in honors classes. You're obviously smart enough to not fail. Besides I've noticed everyone's Sophomore year either ROCKS or sucks balls.
#33
What Dirk said, yo. Do the best you can, but don't worry too too much about it. A lot of times if you just let stuff happen, you end up better than you would if you hadn't.
EDIT: And yes, there's a lot of money in the field of graphic design and special effects, if you know how to go about doing it. Try to get an internship in the field when you're older, if that's what you really want, and work your way up from there. Good luck brother.

TS sorry about earlier. It's just been a bad day.

I've been in a similar situation you have and it sucks. You still have plenty of time in front of you so don't worry.

Just do what makes you happy, don't worry about what your family thinks.

community college and transfer, baby.

wait a sec....you're a sophomore?! You have plenty of time to bring up your GPA. Just work hard in all your classes from now on.

You aren't even doing that bad. I rose my GPA from a 2.2 to a 3.2 in two years due to honors boost. All you really need is a decent test score. (top 20% is good enough for college.)

Thing with special effects, other CAD jobs, is they're very competitive, it's like guitar, you may be a good player, but someone else will be better, if you really wanna go for it, you'll need to get someone to teach you EVERYTHING to make you more likely to get the job.
I spent ages getting my finger strength perfectly balanced so it will be more pleasing for technicians wanting a session bassist.

I'm actually considering dropping out of high school at year 10 (which i'm attending)...Most of my grades are Ds, very little C's and i got an F for math this term.

Luckily, i'm in a good band, so this isn't really all that negative.

EDIT: I was actually put on academic probation this week, because i've missed 150 classes without an apparent reason last term and i came to school once completely hammered (to a point where i couldnt recall going to school in the morning and waking up in the evening with the 'wtf happened' expression

You're only a Sophomore, you have some time to bring up that crappy GPA.
Colleges look at your ACT scores first, however.
Also, if you drop out of the Honors classes you might do better.
