I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

a tube amp that is good for under $500? the only combos i can recall are marshall blues breakers or the mesa combos, I don't really like the combs, and for $500 you would probably need to buy it used. also to get those tones, you should get a marshall (execpt for metallica, they use all kinds of crazy ****) the blues breaker might work with you , but you'd also have to get an OD pedal and of course a noise supprssor.

i got my 5150 for $500 used with new tubes works great for anything that requires a lot of gain.
but if you need a good clean you might be turned off.

maybe a used peavey triple xxx 112 40 watt combo.
i almost bought one for 600.
but i couldnt resist a 5150.
but ive heard the triple xxx's are pretty good amps.
it probably has better cleans than a 5150 too.

I'm also looking for a good metal amp for a price of around $600 to $700, but before I say more, here are the things that I have heard from others or have noticed about the amps from trying them out.

RG50TC:

-Cleans are not so great.
-The two gain types are basically the same.
-Good distortion

Peavy Valveking:

-Crappy speakers.
-Wimpy distortion
-Good cleans

B-52 AT-212:

-Great sound overall (for price)
-EXTREME reliability problems

Bugera 333XL:

-Supposedly good sound
-Possible reliability issues
-Can't find them anywhere!!!

That's the information I have gathered, if anyone can correct me on this or give me new information that would be great. I have been doing research for months now and I have no idea what I plan to get.

^i've seen some horror stories with bugeras
not too big a fan of the valveking really.
not the B-52 AT series is pretty awesome.
i played an at112 today at guitarcenter.
all the gain i needed with a schecter hellraiser.
and the 112 was only $300 new.
so maybe the 212's will drop too
very good value.
