Got a noob question for you guys. Are power chords named based on the root note, ie if i played an E with my index finger and turned it into a power chord than would it be an E power chord?

Yup. It's only called a powerchord cause of the perfect 5th.

...If I'm not mistaken. But yes, if you put your index finger on the 3rd fret of the low E, and then the 5th fret of the 5th string, it'd be a G
