I've been playing guitar for several years now, but I've NEVER done fingerpicking. I feel ashamed. I've never really had the desire to until now. My main problem is that I can't get it to sound as bright as I want it to. Could it be a technique problem, or is it just my guitar? I have a Fender DG100 Dreadnought.

Also, do you guys have any good exercises to get all of my fingers on the right hand used to picking? That'd be super-helpful.

^ well a really bright sound will come from a combination of strings, fingernails and even your guitar. personally i do what zack wylde refers to as chicken picking (which is think is technically hybrid picking) where you hold the pick in your thumb and pointer finger and use your other fingers as well. the type of acoustic and strings you use will determine how warm or bright (or both) of a sound you will get. picking without nails/picks will give a more subdued warm tone whereas with nails/picks will give a brighter tone.

I just have standard Elixers as my strings. Which would you reccomend to get the best sound for fingerpicking?

try different kinds, bronze phosphors are decent but there is a better kind i can't remember for the life of me. if i remember correctly they're the most expensive elixirs you can get LOL. its what i use on my ibanez. my ibanez has a somewhat flat sound and a little warm, not very bright at all. but once i put those elixirs on there it really kicks it up and makes it pretty bright.

No brightness suggestions, since I'm not really a huge tone freak...

But here're some good, practical songs to get your fingers started with fingerpicking.

More Than A Feeling- Boston.

The intro is fingerpicked with thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers... But it's a lot easier than it sounds/looks.

Tears in Heaven- Eric Clapton.

It's a good beginner exercise. Slightly difficult the first few times, but keep at it, and it's a piece of cake.

Master of Puppets- Metallica.

The interlude is meant to be picked, but it's fun to fingerpick too. Here it is in code, so you don't have to go digging through that massive tab.

Nothing Else Matters- Metallica.

Pretty good song overall to fingerpick.

Have fun.

I'll try out the first two. I'm not touching anything Metallica with a forty-foot pole, though. Can't stand them.
