What is the best amp for me, I am a beginner/intermediate player (much closer to beginner) I have a budget of under 300. I have a Fender 2001 Mexican HSS Stratocaster, and I like playing/try to play Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Zeppelin, The Beatles, anything bluesy. Also, what is a good solo I should learn how to play, i need something a little easier than the little wing, fingers aren't quite strong enough.

valve junior half stack or combo? should i mention that i heard tube amps only sound great when cranked, and that i will only play mostly at low volumes?
#7
in that range, Fender Pro Junior, if you can stretch another 80 bucks (do it, its better in the end). Probably a better suited amp for your styles. If you can find one, go for a used blues junior, as ive seen them go for around 300.

exactly what i was just going to suggest, the pro junior is probably the best thing i have bought for guitar

Peavey Classic 30 used.

Seriously these are very cheap used and great amps for the price, I have a 50 and it's great for classic rock.

Then get a 5 watt tube amp.

The Valve Junior. Crate V8, Little Giant are all pretty decent classic rock amps.

Or you could go the modeling route and get a Vox valvetronix. However the small tube amps will most probably be better in the long run.

The Valve Junior. Both the combo and the head/cab are good. You get more low end and volume out of the head/cab, but for what your talking about you may be happier with the $150 combo and $150 worth of pedals. Your best bet would probably be to look for a good used multi-fx pedal (the higher the quality the better). You'll get a huge variety of good low volume tone. You should be able to get close to cover tone on the groups you mentioned depending on the pedal you get.

^ Pretty good, a Valve Junior with two or three good pedals should work out very nicely.

As long as you don't get the chronic rattling problem I had with mine it is a great amp but beware!

If you are in America, look into the Crate V-18

what are some good pedals, and how much would they cost? what exactly does an overdrive pedal do, would that help me get the classic tube sound at low volumes?
#16
^ Well there are ALOT of options.

But the good thing is with the money you save from getting a smaller tube amp you can afford a quality pedal.

For that bluesy tube overdrive you hear from Zeppelin and Cream look into an overdrive or fuzz pedal.

The Fulltone OCD is a very well liked pedal though I haven't had the chance to try one, it's supposed to be perfect for that overdriven sound you want.

Also some sort of germanium fuzz face or Tonebender clone might be good. Jimmy used the tonebender alot in the earlier days.

While this IS a very good amp; finding it for $300 is a real treasure hunt. I've seen a few on guitar center go for the VERY LEAST $275 and those suckers go like hot cakes. But if you can find one for $300 take it.

Wow super Necrobump much? I haven't seen these people in years

I would hate to play through a pro junior or even a valve junior with the crap speakers they come with. Pedals won't fix that
