I say you dont learn them. As soon as you learn the boxes you get caught in them. If you only know about the scale and where the notes are you instantly feel much more free!

There's more than one pentatonic scale, A-Minor is a relatively simple scale going like

---------------------------5-8-
---------------------5-7-
---------------5-7-
---------5-7-
-5-8-

And let's say E-Minor would be


---------------------------------5-7-10-
--------------------------5-8-
-----------------------7-
-------------5-7-9-
--------5-7-
-5-7-

The boxes vary up and down the fretboard depending on which position you're using, but it's better to spice it up with some of your own variation to create better solos, improvise well and make up your own licks.

Yes I know there's more than one pentatonic scale. jus didn't know the boxes.
