whats the difference between a jazz and a Precision bass?

They sound different. Also, Jazz basses have a thinner neck. Try em both out.

Jazz bass: thin neck, two single coil pickups, larger body, brighter sound.

Precision bass: chunkier neck, one split-coil pickup, fatter sound.

Both P and J basses are usually fretted. Fender have made fretless versions of both.
