Well...yes. That's what normally happens with abbreviations isn't it?

Not with acronymns like CERN or NARTH. Alot you can pronounce as words. But these little chat acronyms you're right.

It differs. I read brb as 'burb', I don't even translate it into English, but I know what it means. Etc.

As far as internet slang goes, the only one that I mentally read as the words rather than the letters is "ftw."

Those are a special case of abbreviation: Acronyms.

Other abbreviations aren't designed to be pronounced, so I just put the words in. With the exception of lol, which comes out as ell-oh-ell in my head.

Does anyone else read "lol" as if the letters are making a word?

Yes. This is how the brain works. You'll notice that these words aren't actually the sound of someone talking, but your brain takes a shortcut to what the meaning of the words are rather than make you concious that you're just looking at different combinations of lines.
#11
I read the 'brb' but it means the same so it doesn't matter. You know?

I read most expressions like omg, ftw etc as their actual words

But expressions of humour I just read as the letters like "lol" "lmao" "rofl"

For some reason I make all expressions of humor into words. As in a word of their own, not the separate words they represent.

^That's what I do too.

"Lol" is to me its own word. Possibly because I greet some of my friends IRL(lulz) with "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL" because it's amusing. Generally, anything that doesn't flow well (TS, brb) comes to me as letters, (Tee Ess, Bee Are Bee), and anything that does (lol) just comes how it's spelt. Very rarely do I actually see the words when I read them.

I have a friend that says "lawl" all the time instead of L-O-L. He'll be reading me a text message and if the person says "lol" he literally says ''lawl''.

depends on the abreviation: brb and ftw i read as the words; but TS I read as TS.

also i always say omg instead of o my god.
"You're a twat!"- That dude in morrisons

"You Ugly git!" - That girl in the restaurant

"You Were a Mistake!" - Mum

just a few of my fans..

On some acronyms, I tend to think it in terms of the sound of the first letter. Like, "wtf" is "wh th fuh" in my brain.

I'm going to list it Simple Man's way:

lol - letters
brb - buh re buh
ftw - fuh th wi
btw - buh th wuh
jk - juh ki
lmao- letters
omg - oh muh guh
rofl - raffle

They look ridiculous spelled.

I wonder if the way we hear these in our heads means something about our personality or the way we think...

ftw - fuh teh wi

Most I don't even mentally pronounce. I read it as a concept, if that makes sense.
Nope, no sig here.

Yes, but that's because in Dutch it's an actual word that can be used almost the same as LOL. UG is read as You Gee though. I guess it depends on the pronoucability. The real common ones like omg and brb I read as the words though.
#28
i don't actually read them as words, i just sound it out how you'd say it, in my head, like ell-oh-ell and fuh-tuh-wuh and bee-arr-bee
