If you have say an orange speaker, does it need an orange head, or in fact any head, can ou just plug an amp into the speaker?

As long as the ohms match and the wattage of the speaker isn't much lower than the amp (like plugging in a 100W head into a 50W speaker) everything is fine.

Also Orange doesn't make speakers.

you can plug a 30 watt amp into a 25, 30 or whatever higher cabinet as long as the ohms match. like 8 ohms of the amp into 8 ohms of the speaker

no ?

see, you've got a combo, which is an amp (preamp + power amp) and a speaker (or more than one) in one package.

then there's the 'half stack', which is the amp and the speaker in a 'box' (which is called a cabinet) separately.

combo:

half stack:

you can plug a 30 watt 'amp' (head is probably what you mean) into any cab of 30 watts or more (30, 50, 100, 589210 watts; doesn't matter) if that is what you're asking.
