Alright, I have a poetry assignment for English. I'll just say it upfront: I don't care for poetry. So, I'm looking for modern poets who wrote poems that are short and easy to understand. If you're a poetry enthusiast, please recommend me some authors that fit my preference.

My teacher defines a modern poet as one who has published most of his/her work by 1950s-70s.

Here's a list of poets suggested already, tell me if you see one you like:

Maggie Anderson
Elizabeth Bishop
Richard Wilbur
Randall Jarrell
James Write
Robert Lowell
Linda Pastan
Howard Nemerov
William Jay Smith
Ethelbert Miller
Anne Sexton
John Berryman
Gwendolyn Brooks
Sharon Olds
Sylvia Path
Denise Levertov
Adrienne Rich
JV Cunningham
John Ashbery
May Miller
Garth Tate
Peter Klappert
Michael Blumenthal
Gary Gildner
Ethridge Knight
Tess Gallagher
Amy Clampitt
Billy COllins
Rod Jellema
Carolyn Forche
Barbara Lefcowitz
Martin Galvin
Katherine Zadravec
William Meredith
Muriel Ruykeyser
Henry Taylor
Rita Dove
Mary Oliver
Anthony Hecht
Shawn Heaney
Julia Kasdorf

Edit: No songwriters as poets, please.

...modes and scales are still useless.

No. But thanks.

I'm trying to avoid using a songwriter for a poet.

Leonard Cohen. My favorite modern poet. Yes he was a singer/songwriter but that was only after he had two or three poetry books under his belt. Hell I was reading his poetry before I even realised he had music as well. His poetry is straight forward and easy to understand, mostly deals with love and longing. My favorite books of his are "The Spice Box of earth" and "Book of Longing".

Hmm, interesting suggestion. I'll look into him.

Well, I specifically don't want to use Bob Dylan because it would be cliche and unimaginative to us such an obvious figure.

You're in for a ride. Most contemporary poetry is depressing and bleak. Besides, as Dylan said, "Happy? Anyone can be happy; what's the purpose of that?"

i was going to suggest him too

You misspelt Sylvia Plath in the OP.

I'd go with her, we did her at school. Just remember that she's got major father issues and that plays into her work quite a lot. Do "Daddy" that's the most obvious one.

K, so far it seems like Plath, Cohen, and Bukowski are my best bets...

Btw, I was just looking at one of Bukowski's poems called 16-bit Intel 8088 chip. I can't make sense out of it at all, but I should pick it just for the lols.

It is depressing, and i originally wrote it as 'plath' but then saw you had it 'path' and changed it, as my memory fails me more often than not. Anyway, that's a neat Dylan quote, and who cares if it's depressing; it evokes emotions, and you can write tons about it
