I need to be able to play half an hour of music for the PTA Installation Meeting. It needs to be folk/bluegrass sounding since the theme is "Western" ("Oh, Susannah"; "Camp Town Races"; etc.) Any suggestions? I'll be switching between guitar and mandolin, so stuff for either would be okay. Thanks!

When are you going to be playing? There's almost too much to list. Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, man, there's too many amazing artists to list.

I recommend you look in your public library for books of folk songs to play. Other than that, look up books by either John Lomax or his son, Alan Lomax. Both wrote comprehensive books on Americana and cowboy songs.

That would be a good place to start.

I'm sure I can come up with much more once the room stops spinning.

Edit: Jonathan Coulton did an amazing medley of When Johnny Comes Marching Home and The Big Rock Candy Mountain for John Hodgman's audiobook. You can find the song played here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1JIa5r5nkE

^ The rooms spinning already? Its what, 9PM there? Either you're a professional or you need to build your stamina up!

Anyways, I'd check www.ezfolk.com . They have chord charts for lots of the standards...though it won't be a big help if you didn't want to sing.

"Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" by Bob Dylan, from Blood on the Tracks. Great ballad that'll give you a good chunk of your 30 minutes.

^ I think you're lying...but I digress. At least the whiskey fits the thread.

No vocals, I've got to have it down by May 16. I'm basicly backround music, so chords may work. Thanks so far!

I only had a glass, and it was watered down. I'm actually feeling ill and shouldn't have had the drink in the first place. Drinking surprisingly doesn't effect my typing skills too much. The spellchecker gets more of a workout . . . that's it.
Sincerely, Chad.
