Hi,
I'm planning on buying my first guitar ever and I'm having trouble deciding
between an Epihpne SG-310 and a Squier Affinity. Both guitars cost ~300 U$S
here (taxes, lots of taxes), which is all I'm planning to spend on my first
guitar.

I have to say that for that money the SG looks like a better deal (and read
better reviews about it, specially regarding the pickups and tuners), but I'm
not sure whether it is as easy to play as the Squier and more importantly if
it is the right guitar for the kind of music I'd like to play (read below),
since it's used so much for metal and hard rock.

Here's my background:
- I'm 20 years old, live in Argentina, study Computer Science
- Studied Sax from 1997 to 2002
- Have a pretty good musical formation (I'm planning to teach myself the
basics)

Some of my favorite guitarists are:
Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Duane Allman, Tom Morello

And although I listen to a wide variety of music (including metal, industrial
and progressive rock), I'd like to eventually be able to play the styles of
music they do/did (hopefully _like_ they do/did ;-).

Which one do you recommend, considering my taste, to be my first guitar? I
also hear suggestions about other brands like Ibanez, Washburn, etc.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for my poor English

PD: Great site, great reviews!

SG is far better than the Squier... and I say that as a Strat lover.

Ohhhh if you like Mr. Tom you must go with the SG. The strat can't do 1/2 the **** that tom does while the SG can. So I vote for the SG...plus they're just sexy

If you can fork out a bit more, a second hand Mexican Strat would be a fantastic idea.

I beg to disagree. The SG doesn't have a trem, which Mr. Morello likes to abuse the heck out of.

I'd vote for the strat, though i'd recommend changing the pickups. And, a MiM Fender would be better than both choices, while being only slightly cheaper than high-end Epiphones (oxymoron).

I agree with everyone else, try and find a used Mexican strat, it is a huge step above both of those guitars. I don't know how much they are in Argentina but in the US you could get a new one for 350ish. Squire quality isn't too great but a real fender will not leave you disappointed.

Go with the affinity. Besides, if you ever want to mod it, the strat's gonna be much easier. Also, The G-310's neck angle is wrong. it's at a strat angle, when it needs about 3 degrees more of angle because of the tunomatic. it makes it difficult to play.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

a used g-400 would be much better than a 310..

Mexican Strats cost no less than 780 USD new.

I considered buying a used guitar, but given I'm a newbie I can't tell how good it's state is, so I think I'll buy a new one.

I still haven't made my choice, but thanks for all the help!

EDIT: Couldn't find a used MiM Strat for less than ~580 USD, way over my budget :P

I wish!
As I said in my first post I live in Argentina, and those prices don' t exist here :-(

Even if I bought it from musiciansfriend.com, taxes to import it would be around 80% (I know, it's stupid, but I don't write the laws!)
