im guitarist in a band, with a singer, a bassist and a drummer. the singer doesnt play guitar, apart from two or three chords, and i have been playing the guitar for three years, and can play relatively quickly. the situation is this. we play mainly covers at our gigs, to entertain our fickle younmg audience, who only have a basic rock grounding, and wouldnt know for example, more tha five led zeppelin tracks at most.
right now this is what ourt setlist looks like:

Kick up the carpet (original)
Ziggy stardust
Should i stay or should i go
Shot Down (original)
Take It everyday (original)
Pretty good (original)
Jumping Jack Flash
Lets dance To joy division
Heartbreaker (original)
Plug in Baby
Steady As She Goes
Johnny B. Goode
Wild Thing
Teenage Kicks

We are also planning to do
Hysteria
Another original
Children of the revolution
What became of the likely lads
Suffragette city
The seeker

and already know beautiful day.
However, we still need more songs, and need more covers, cause as much as i have faith in you guys, you cant help me with my originals, but you can help me with this.

nothing heavier than led zeppelin or deep purple, and nothing softer than something like pink floyd.
these hsould be songs people will enjoy, not on the run, or you shook me, theyre great songs, but nobody knows them.

I'd be seriously surprised if you found kids who have heard David Bowie.

play on guitar, play c chord (then lift the first finger) and then F chord and slide so it does:

C=C Chord
Cx= C without 1st finger
F= F chord
Fs= F Slide 1 note

C C C CX F F F Fs C C C ...

lol dunno if that made sense but i hope i helped!

That's a blast to play and always gets a crowd going, but it demands its singer for sure. It goes WAY high.

hell if you absolutely need cover like fast and easy... anything by BLink 182.... there stuff is fairly simple and isnt extremely crazy on the vocal range

London Calling
Time Is Running Out
Vertigo
Motorcycle Emptiness (the kids might not know it, but it's such a great song)
Design for Life

You could also tailor a song based on what's big, if you play such and such song and it's just gone number 1 in the charts, could work out well.
My "Rig":

Fender American Telecaster
Boss OD-2
EHX Small Clone
EHX SMM avec HAZARAI

Blink 182
Green Day
Arctic Monkeys
White Stripes
Foo Fighters
Nickelback
Linkin Park

There's a good start for crowd pleasers for an audience in 2008.

Edit** I'm finding this whole recommendations for covers thing really bizarre. I'm twice some of your ages (38), and all you kids are suggesting stuff (I know, but only because you're guitar players) that would alienate any crowd after about 1995. Turn on the radio to a modern rock station. Look up their top 8 at 8. Play those!

Could I get some more talent in the monitors, please?

I know it sounds crazy, but try to learn to inhale your voice. www.thebelcantotechnique.com

I don't think Iron Man would go over their heads. Its been in all the trailers for the Iron Man movie and its been in guitar hero. I think kids have been exposed to it enough to recognize it.

Alot of people are getting more into say, late 90s early 00s rock, so if you have any old Kerrang cd's or something like that, it might be good to check them out.

try Walkie Talkie Man - Stereogram

shouldn't be too hard and everyone will recognize it!

I would reccomend A Rush song, but I highly doubt your singer could hit most of the songs. Try something like Enter Sandman, a Foo Fighers song (anyone will do), or Breaking the Law, by Judas Priest. BTL is a blast to play and the crowd can easily join in on the chorus.
Eschquipment:
Epiphone SG400
Peavy Vypr 30 watt
Dean Vendetta XM

and thats about it...

enter sandman would kill everything totally dead, judas priest too. aanything heavier athn deep purple is out of bands
