alright, well, i was wondering what you guys (or girls) do to get started on a song, like, do you build it off chords, or scales or whatever

What is it that gets you people started with a song?
I do it off of chords, mostly. It's easier that way. Or I do it riff by riff, til I get some semblance of the song.
I just start plucking strings, and then I build off whatever sounds good.

I usually start with chords, and I find chords that sound okay together, and then figure out what scale it's in. Then I usually write a lead riff over that, and then the song begins. That may not be the best way of doing things, but it's what's comfortable for me, and that's what matters.

Just do what comes naturally, and build from there.
ok, yeah. my name is silly because I signed up when I was 13.

I piss about on the guitar until something interesting happens then take it from there.

EDIT: Waaaait a minute.

I thought that said you piss on the guitar until something interesting happens.

You're not as cool as I thought you were.

i start off with the generic drop D power chord, then up on the eighth fret (Bb) and make some generic metalcore riff. or i transpose the chords somewhere else and make some sweet acoustic thing. i suck at guitar.
I don't.
Really, I can't just sit down and decide to write a song.

Sometimes when I just mess around improvising I'll find somethings that sound nice together.

Weeks later I'll come back to that and fill it out into a song.

But really one can't force inspiration.
