My girlfriends family has a beaten up classical guitar (nylon strings on G, B, E) and i'd like to see if i can fix it up a bit. knowing **** all about restringing a classical guitar (im fine with acoustic/electric restringing) can you guys give me some do's and don'ts for this? Like i already know not to stretch nylon strings as it makes them eneven, that kind of thing.

Thanks.

Also, you can get nylon strings with ball-ends so you don't have to mess around with stringing at the bridge..

great thanks!

do you know of a reputable make? I know d'addario do some but can they be trusted as far as nylon strings go?

Don't know about D'addario strings, sorry.. I only ever used Dean Markley's and they have served me very well.

But I would suspect the D'addario would do the job too.. I think Ernie Ball makes some too.

I used D'addario and they were good! No problems there.

You really can't do anything disastrously wrong stringing a classical guitar... except once when I was using pliers to tighten the knots on one of the nylon strings and the pliers slipped and put a big gouge in the beautiful, flawless top. Don't do that.

If you want the best, I'd choose the Aquila Ambra set for guitar. I've been an integral part in finishing many custom classical guitars, and I always string them with these strings. They are the absolute best, in my opinion. Though, due to cost, I always choose D'Addario for cheap classical guitars that pass through my shop.
Sincerely, Chad.

D'addario Hard Tension, are, for lack of a better word, the ****. Very comfortable on the fingers and you can get a large amount of volume from them even with fingerpicking.

Just make sure that when you pass the string through the hole at the neck that you pass the loose end underneath the string that is going over the fretboard. That locks the string in place and keeps in tune infinitely better. As far as the bridge goes, make sure you have more loops on your treble strings and less on your bass strings.

Stringing a classical, in my opinion is easier than anything else...you should do alright.

Savarez strings are another option to D'addario. A bit cheaper I think. Pics!

You are meant to avoid laziness and crop the ends of the strings so they don't vibrate off your top, but I was lazy and wanted to get some pics.

I've never cared for them, personally. I find that they "go bad" very fast.

Odd, I find they stay crisp sounding for quite a while.

Who knows? Could be this Michigan weather.

Or it could be the Asturian weather!

It's amazing what an effect weather has on strings. I have people in Canada tell me that 80/20 bronze strings sound dead after one day to them . . .

I dunno . . . it could always be the weather. Or it could be my ears
Sincerely, Chad.

I LOVE Savarez strings. Loses volume early but the tone remains exceptionally brittle...some players don't like that. They even feel brittle! And not exactly round. And maybe a little dry (or sticky?). To me, they feel very organic (maybe cat-gut-like?) and the tone is INCREDIBLE. Savarez is my first choice.
