Im trying to learn to sing and play at the same time, but Ive been having some trouble. I know that ultimately I just gotta practice practice practice, but is there any specific things I can do to work on these other than taking it slow and building up speed?

Learn the song thoroughly on guitar then add the words.
On the eight day we spoke back...

let there be sound.

Make sure that you can play the guitar part flawlessly, without thinking about it, then start trying to hum the melody, and once you can do that try actually singing the words. Go slow and try to note where the rhythm of the guitar and the rhythm of the vocals match up and where they don't.

And practice A LOT.

Absolutely!! and it also helps if you write your own stuff cause then you'll most likely know the riff/song inside and out...i know i can sing all my own stuff (even though i sing like ****)

sort of a duh thing, but as well as knowing the guitar part in and out, you should be able to sing the song without thinking about it as well... when you can do both without thinking, you're golden
