I can only know from my own experience, but it seems like most girls don't like to tune their guitars to anything other than standard E.
-What's up with that?

I am finally discovering that there are some chicks (like myself) out there that like to play along with metal bands.
And I don't just mean Metallica, I am talking about the good stuff: Death, Behemoth, Carcass, etc...

But it seems like every person of the female race won't tune down.
-Am I the only one that likes it when the music I play goes with the music that is coming out the other speakers?

Plus the lower stuff makes it sound so much more doomish. Which is pretty kick ass when your showing off against some dude who is playing simple punk tunes.

There is no real purpose to this, I just find it strange.

Because not every girl that plays guitar plays metal? And metal doesn't necessarily have to be downtuned to sound good...

I tune my guitar differently when need be...
I generally don't play along with songs though, not that that makes any difference =/

Whether you like it or not, guys and gals are different. Socialised or naturally, we like different things.

MOST females are more inclined to vocal, clean songs and the like; while guys are into penis-enlarging sweeps and chugging.

because those girls had a guy tune their guitar. and not wanting to confuse them, he tuned it to standard. those girls then learned how to play four seconds of three songs like smoke on the water or iron man. if they even "know" about alternate tuning then they are afraid to do it cuz they dont think they can put it back.

I'm a dude
and I don't alternate tune very often
The standard tuning is devised to be easy to get what you want out of it and be good for the "average" voice, so hence why you probably see a lot of people sticking in standard. Like me, for instance.

I'm a dude, and I make very liberal use of alternate, open, and custom tunings.

I know a fer girls that play, and the only other tuning I've seen them use with any regularity is drop D. *shrugs*

I know a lot of chicks that use open E, open G and DADGAD for various things.

and why the hell does everyone associate alternate tuning with drop tunings used in metal? there are a lot of other alternate tunings out there.

most girls aren't that diverse with their guitar playing.

ex.

-girl--buys guitar and takes lessons for years on end learning her favorite paramore songs.

-guy--buys guitar, takes 3 lessons, writes a song, joins a band, buys a new guitar, smashes first guitar, quits a band....

do you get my point? guys just become much more involved in the music they play.

Wouldn't alternate tunings offer these "variety of choices" you speak of?
