A few things have happened to me this week that have finally made me realize:

It's cool to be stupid.

Honestly, I think most people do want to be smart, but I think a lot people want to hide their intelligence, however, I know people who have actually got mad at others for saying things that show at least some intelligence. I'll start with the one thing that happened to me this week.

I have a friend (Friend A) and even though we talk about things that are mainly pointless and just for laughs, we like to talk about religion, philosophy and politics a lot (he's an atheist/anarchist/nihilist, none of which I am, so I enjoy the discussions). I was having this conversation with Friend B, who mainly enjoys talking about how hot or ugly certain girls are.

Friend B: "Man, my study hall is so boring."

Me: "Study hall is alright if you know people. I hated last semester, but Friend A is in my study hall this semester."

Friend B: "Oh yeah, he sat behind me last semester in study hall. We always talked about stupid sh*t."

Me: "Really? He's one of my very few friends who I have intellectual conversations with."

Friend B: "Dude, why do you keep using all these big words?! Intel.... Int.... Intellec... Intellectual, is that how you say it?"

Honestly, I don't think my diction was that amazing. Nor do I think "intellectual" is that astounding of a word to use. I think it's a pretty ordinary and every-day word.

It's not just that, but in one class, there's this one guy I know (4.0 GPA). I know grades aren't a perfect way to tell how smart someone is, but I talk to him a lot, and I think he's a smart guy. Or at least smarter than I am. He was trying to explain something to one of my friends, and he was using words that are somewhat "advanced" (I can't really think of an accurate adjective right now). This girl (very trendy and stereotypical teenager) pounces on him and says (somewhat angrily) "Why do you have to talk like that, with those kind of words? Why can't you just talk like a normal person?! Geez...."

I'm just wondering what you guys opinions are. Do you think it's almost cool to be stupid? Like I said, I think most people want to be smart, but lately, at least with the people I know, it's like it's almost shameful to be intelligent or just sound intelligent.

Although I don't know if there's a connection, Friend B from my first example is a creationist. =/

I've noticed that.

I don't think it's cool to be stupid, but you can still be cool and stupid.

I get that too. I told a friend I love to practice Archery. ''So you're an Archerist eh??'' me - "An Archer..''

"Ooooh smart guy!''

Its kind of hard to explain. Like when you're with dumber people, you dont really want to come off as too smart or intimidate them or something. Like you kinda copy the way they talk. I dont know if its for acceptance or to fit in or what, but I do it sometimes.

Unless the person is really stupid.

I generally don't associate with people who are very unintelligent unless I know them very well or they share a remote interest with me. My jokes or conversations usually don't go so well.

I find myself doing that, too. Like when I'm around some people, I might say sex jokes a lot more than other people. With other people, I might want to talk more about school, or or current events.

I used the word "perpendicular" to describe a street that didn't run in the same direction as another, and the entire room found it hilarious. I just made myself feel better by calling em dumb f***s for not knowing the word to begin with.

"Dude, they teach this s**t in like 6th grade, are you retarded?"

Bit on the prick-ish side maybe, but they started it. Wrong + wrong = win

I have a massive vocabulary, but I avoid using it in everyday situations just to avoid being bitched at like that...

However, I do have one friend who I can talk to without feeling like I have to dumb myself down.

I think its so you can relate to people better. I can hold an intelligent conversation with someone if i wanted, but i mostly talk about stupid things.
#11
yeah, iv found that
its kinda annoying, but people don't go thinking people are losers if they are smart
i think its just that people don't like being intimidated. They want people to be at their level or lower. or a person might purposly talk stupid or adct w/o common sense in fear that the person they are talking to will be intimidated.
Its stupid, but its how life is

I find that being smart is cool at least amongst my friends. When people get mad at me for using big words or act stupidly I just can't help but feel slight contempt for them. That kinda makes me an asshole but at least I get to think highly of myself .

Also, I am a creationist.

There's so many girls at my school that make 4.0's and are stupid as **** when it comes to basic stuff. And they sound serious half the time.

IMO smart people that act stupid basically want attention.

Yeah... It seems that people kind of "regress" in certain situations, especially when they're anxious or something similar. For example, I know plenty of girls who tend to pretend dumber than they are, it varies with the crowd.
#16
I hate it when people do that, too. We were debating in my English class a few days ago, and I was using words like "apathetic", "ignorant", "ironic", and "extent" (which could hardly be classified as 'big words'), and more than one person asked me what all those words meant after class.

*sigh*
#17
i think that mainstream society as an entire entity is just becoming "dumbed down" im a mostly liked guy by everyone. so im by no means a prick with my intelligence. though a majority of people are dumber than me i don't talk down to them. moral of the story don't be a psuedo intellectual. and im by know means the smartest guy out there (struggled with calc. as a junior in highschool) and a fair amount of my friends are smarter than me but it really doesn't matter. as long as people can coexist i find no problem in lack of intelligence with people aka if we all are smart enough to hit a bong there is no problem
#18
I hate that, I think it's definitely cool to be not smart, especially around here (dang rednecks)

Edit: I don't actually think that, I meant that that's what it's like at my school
#20
I can truthfully say i have never met a person that was even slightly intelligent in my grade. Its actualy quite funny because 90% of my grade if i used a word of over a 5th grade level , lets just say stupendous, they will look at me like im an alien and ask what it means
#21
yeah there seems to be a wave of anti-intellectualism currently, A lot of it I think has to do with the resurgence of protestant evangelism and the immense dumbing down of popular culture.

I like nothing more when a person doesn't understand a word someone says, and is able to humbly ask what it means.

It might help to use proper grammar before saying something like this. Just a thought.
#25
I don't think anyone should have to lower and debase their vocabulary in order to appeal to people who deem themselves "normal" because they are less intelligent.

I think they should all just pick up a ****in dictionary and learn, rather than attempt to coerce higher minded individuals to stoop down to their level. It doesn't hurt to learn...

It's true, those that act less intelligent seem to be much more accepted and popular. Possibly because they speak at a level that everyone understands. There's this kid I know, very intelligent, but he acts dumb and he's very well known throughout the entire school. Do I believe he would be as popular if he spoke at his academic level? Quite frankly, no.

I am not compatible with the type of stupids you describe. My sense of humour goes straight over their heads, my manner of speaking confuses them, and I care about things other than America's Next Top Model. This is why they seem more popular - They can more readily socialise with their own kind.

I wouldn't say it's cool, just the norm. There are far more lower class people who have been brought up with the kind of ignorance and apathetic attitude you describe; intelligence threatens them. They are the majority and so look upon intelligence as strange.

I wonder what it would be like to be stupid. Surely they exist at some lower level... Surely they do not share the same appreciation of life as we do...

While I agree with you, and I strive for proper grammar myself, he was not voicing his lack of grammatical skills, but his exceptional (to his peers that is) vocabulary skills.

I can see where you are coming from with this, but it's not always like that. From my experiences, there's always that group of people who seem to enjoy being "stupid", spending all their time on pointless matters; however, they tend to be looked down upon by the majority of their peers (at least in my school).

Then again, some people just appear to be stupid when they are actually quite smart. For example, I look like a completely burned out crackhead (according to certain people, though I can see where they get that idea), and people are often amazed that I got 92% on my English final, only spending a third of the allotted time.

Also, literal creationism makes me cry. (although I hope there's no connection there)
#32
I get it. Like I'm smarter than most of my friends.
So I usually have to speak in simpler terms.
Not that I go into anything crazy though.

I wanna add that in addition to people 'acting dumb', I've met a lot of smart people who act like concieted pricks because of it.

That and everyone says they're smart. I assure you if you did a poll most people on here would say their I.Q. is right up there with Steve Hawking.

ive actually found there are very few "stupid" people out there, they just dont choose to use their intelligence
#37
I don't know. I think stupid people can get quite intimidated by intelligence, and sort of lash out against it.

But maybe that's just me being arrogant and they really do dislike the use of intelligence/me.

If so, there is TS's answer as to why "smart" people get a bad rap.

Why? i completely agree with that guy

i try my hardest to use big, sophisticated words, especially at school. I just love it when people are like " what?!" i've even got an engish teacher to do that!
