Well the way i do it is i use a pocket pod or other guitar effects processor plug my guitar in to the line in input on my soundcard, that will give the effects i want, or i can bypass the effects on the pod and use computer based ones such as amplitube 2, using the pod as a pre-amp. You can also get devices on which you can connect your guitar and they connect to the computer via USB. You can connect your guitar straight directly into your computer but i think you can only get a clean tone unless you use amplitube etc. but you might neeed a pre amp

Well it depends on ur sound card really... if it is a top of the line one then there should be a jack on it where u can plug in ur guitar. Otherwise get a adapter that well allow u to connect ur guitar into ur mic input...
