Hey guys,

I'm going shopping in town today and have a pretty nice budget to work with. I'm gonna go and bulk up my metal collection like never before, so I need some of your suggestions as to what to buy.
I've listened to metal before but I'm more of a blues rock person so I don't really know what I'm looking for, so any suggestions on any sort of metal to buy would be good.
I've got the obvious stuff like the Black Album, Blackening, Pantera etc. but please still suggest anything.

Thanks!

If you're newer to metal, I suggest some Iron Maiden.

Ideal albums would be Number of The Beast, Powerslave or Piece of Mind.

Autopsy - Severed Survival
Obituary - Slowly We Rot
Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal To The Flesh

for some essential death metal
O what a disgrace if such a despised and base race, which worships demons, should conquer a people which has the faith of omnipotent God and is made glorious with the name of Christ!

Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow
Candlemass - Nightfall
Mercyful Fate - Melissa, Don't Break the Oath
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger (yes, I am aware they are not considered metal on these forums, but I am going to recommend this anyway, obvious or not, metal or not)
Bathory - Hammerheart
Carcass - Heartwork, Choice Cuts
Death - Symbolic, Spiritual Healing, Human
Coroner - No More Color, R.I.P. (if you can find them, I don't know what your music stores usually carry)

have fun

try the new origin for death, some queensryce for classic (operation mindcrime, the original one not the new one, is the best metal album ever), Dream theaters Images and words for prog, Testament for thrash (new one comes out tuesday), celtic frost for your black metal, and extremes pornografitti for your funky hair metal (nuno writes the best riffs). good luck

Metallica - Kill 'em All
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance

oh yeah you also need some black label society- stronger than death. That album slams so hard it makes me want to destoy EVERYTHING. Slayers god hates us all is also another one for that. Any megadeth album except risk, (unless you like techno mixed with crappy songwrting). Everyone else has the right idea, rust in peace is genuis, the solo in Tornado of souls made jesus smile.
#10
Also try Nocturnal Rites- Grand illusion for some wailing, but tasteful guitar solos. How about some finntroll? Amon Amarth, is some great viking metal. You might have some trouble finding the first two though.

Children of Bodom - Follow The Reaper
Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll
Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder
Children of Bodom - Something Wild
Children of Bodom - Are You dead yet?

Any guesses wot my fav band r??
#13
i also highly recommend Into Eternity, Buried in oblivion
and if u cant decid on which children of bodom album go follow the reaper

Children of Decadence and Taste of my scythe are epic songs
#14
Yeah get some necrophagist. i saw them last year and the pit stopped when they started playing. we were standing there mouths to the floor, wondering how it was possible. no one moved during the whole show.
#15
Thanks everyone, still not going for a while so keep telling me some stuff to get!
And which is the best children of bodom album??
#16
testament - the legacy, the new order, practice what you preach, low, demonic, the gathering, the formation of damnation (comes out tuesday)

metallica - kill em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, ...and justice for all

slayer - hell awaits, reign in blood, south of heaven, seasons in the abyss.

cannibal corpse - just about anything if you want some good brutal death metal.

behemoth - satanica, thelema.6, demigod, the apostasy

machine head - burn my eyes, the more things change, through the ashes of empires

anthrax - spreading the disease, among the living, state of euphoria

carcass - heartwork

in flames - the jester race, whoracle

megadeth - anything but risk or the world needs a hero, but if you're going to get anything by them, get rust in peace

black sabbath - paranoid, masters of reality, vol 4, sabbath bloody sabbath, sabotage, heaven and hell, the mob rules, dehumanizer

dio - holy diver, the last in line

ozzy osbourne - blizzard of ozz, diary of a madman, bark at the moon, no more tears

children of bodom - pretty much anything by them is good, although i would probably stay away from are you dead yet, it's their least best album. i would try going for hatebreeder or hatecrew deathroll

judas priest - sad wings of destiny, sin after sin, stained class, hellbent for leather, british steel, screaming for vengeance, defenders of the faith, painkiller, angel of retribution. jugulator isn't bad either if you want some of the tim owens era priest.

queensryche - operation mindcrime

iron maiden - iron maiden, killers, number of the beast, piece of mind, powerslave, somwhere in time, seventh son of a seventh son, fear of the dark, dance of death, a matter of life and death

iced earth - night of the stormrider, burnt offerings, something wicked this way comes

dream theater - images and words, train of thought, six degrees of inner turbulence, systematic chaos

there's some f***ing metal for ya.

I'd say Follow the Reaper, Hatebreader has some good stuff too. Just avoid Are you dead yet unless you own everything else.

Avoid like the plague, unless you want immature rambling with some random cuss words thrown in for good measure (lyric wise, Alexi is horrible).

Musically they're boring as well.

i have to agree dont get any bodom. here are some song names to help ward you off. "silent night, BODOM night", "lake Bodom" to name a few. Really unoriginal, all ALEXI LAIHO CAN DO IS SWEEP PICK APPARENTLY. They got lucky with follow the reaper, all there is to it.

No. Pig Destroyer is ****ty grind, Nile is good tech/brutal death (and the only one Egyptian themed), Dimmu is ****ty wannabe symphonic black (Bishop of Hexen is infinitely better, Vesperian Sorrow, and Tvangeste also).

For Sumerian BM though: Melechesh. In terms of middle eastern themed music, they blow the pants off Nile and Behemoth.

However, about Bodom: The songs arent really coherent, Alexi's soloing is nothing amazing, and the keys are overused (they're the annoying christmas keys; I have nothing against a keyboard, as long as its not cheesy as hell). Also, a lot of the fans are annoying, pre pubescent teens who dont know ****.

im sorry i called nile black metal, but it was the only one i was referring to though. i am not being an A$$#% i am just saying that blooddrunk is the worst album ever made, i would much rather listen to a fat woman farting on a mic for 45 minutes. Alexi laiho is the ringo star of metal, and his infantile attempts of making music is a mockery to all metalkind. he should join lamb of god, learn to actually play the guitar, and help them rip off testament songs.

That's too far.

He's a fairly talented guitar player; he can play fast and all (and I actually dont hear him play too many sweeps), but, he should learn to write lyrics that make sense (i know it's too much to ask to request GOOD lyrical content. I think he's milked the 'bodom' spiel for all its worth and then some).

It would probably help if he wasnt constantly drunk.

This man makes sense. Laiho is a very talented guitarist, but his lyrics are some of the worst I've seen. Same with his vocals, he could use a lot of improving there.

@TS, Since you don't listen to much Metal, I'd start out with some Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Dio, First four Metallica albums, Megadeth, and work from there depending what genres you like.
