Does anyone else here hold their pick with three fingers (thumb, index and middle) rather than two? (thumb, index)
Gear.

Ibanez Iceman IC400.

And Daron Malakians custom triangle pick.

Thats all you need to know.

i used to, but its not correct, and my guitar teacher told me to stop. Didn't EVH use three fingers?
#6
I did when I started playing, changed the habit gradually.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to put it, along with your other advice, into a book, the pages of which I will then use to wipe my ass.

Hetfield apparently uses a "claw grip", which I imagine is something like what you describe.

^^ index and thumb

that's what I thought... but holding it with my thumb and middle forces the pick to a more perpendicular angle, for me at least

you should have a firm grip, maybe use a less bendy pick. The pick is supposed to cut through the strings, so shouldn't be flat on them and should be slightly angled. oh, and don't dig the plectrum in too deep
guitar teachers ftw.

I can do both, but I prefer using the two fingers and the thumb. It's just more comfortable for me and I don't particularly care if it stops me from doing 20,000 notes per second.
#20
I use my thumb and middle, but used to use three. My technique is **** lol
#21
actually, i still use all my fingers when hybrid picking, coz with hybrid picking i dont think you need to alternate pick fast, which is why i use 3 fingers in the first place

EDIT: sadistic monkeyguy, i find it easier to alternate pick 30,000 nps this way ( ok.....12nps )

Yeah I'm the same! I hold it between thumb and middle finger and use my index finger to change the angle of attack. I can pick in the normal way, but I prefer this way.
#24
I use my index and thumb. I always have, I'm self taught, it just felt natural.

EVH uses thumb and middle. Hetfield uses three.

Same, I find there's very little benefit to playing with two fingers and it means that I sometimes drop the pick.
I play by my own rules. And I have one rule; There are no rules... but if there are, they're there to be broken. Even this one.

Confused? Good.
