I'm planing on getting a tube amp and i play heavymetal, metalcore, mathcore type stuff. So far im intrested in the Peavy valve king and the Hayden peacemaker. They're 2 completely different amps but which is better?

An amp that does great cleans + Good OD or Distortion pedal.

or

An amp that does ok-ish cleans but really good OD and distortion?

My buget is about £400 - $800ish

i have a peavey xxx
the valve king reverb nails van halen
i also recommend a behringer cab with it, if you find a sturdy one

I always buy amps that have really decent cleans and then work the gain structure around that.

Well, you'll be using the distortion a lot more, and most amps with good cleans won't be able to pull off the gain you're looking for, especially at your price range.

I'd go used if I were you!

A 5150 can't do cleans very well however...

^True, but I think he should go for better gain and worse cleans since he plays heavier stuff.

Also, question for threadstarter: What the heck is mathcore?

mathcore takes its name from math rock. which was definitely a tongue in cheek name. but yknow, things stick.

If he doubles his budget he might find a used one...

The Peacemaker is a better bet out of the two.

Amazing stuff really.. that is, if you enjoy insane nonsensical time signatures raping your ears. And it gets better.. around where I live there's a band that's dubbed itself "mathgrind." It's a sight to behold.

Generally it's recommended to go for the better clean sound because you can always get a pedal for drive. But for metal you really need the amp for the job so get something that sounds nice with the kind of gain you like to play with.

My personal preference would be to have a 'clean' amp and a 'drive' amp then you can combine them together and other lovely things...

2 amps sounds expensive. Hmm not really sure mathcore also has random bits of blues and melodic sweeping.

Basically what im asking is if i buy the peacemaker using pedals can i push it to give me more gain and overdrive than the valveking on its own while still getting the great cleans with all the pedals off?

If the peacemaker is just a fallen angel that's been rebranded, it should have plenty of gain on its own.
A dwarf might hear you. What then?
