Ok, so my Grandpa passed away yesterday... And I've always been very close to him - and he's supported me with all my guitaring more than anyone else. His last words to me were "keep at it."

Anyway... I want to play at his funeral, as a thank you to him.

I've picked the song "Winter" by Joshua Radin, and my question is: does anyone have any tips to try and keep the emotions down while playing? I don't want to become a wreck.

Thanks in advance.

Would Go Gay For Grohl.

Just focus on the guitar. Don't think about anything other than playing the song.
Feed your mind.
#3
Keep a clear focus on what you are playing, push emotions to the back of your head.

good luck bro and sorry for you're loss.
#5
I'm sorry for your loss, man.

My advice is this: Think of the song as a gift to him, as a sign of gratitude for his support. Just think of that, but make sure you really believe in it, and you'll play it better than you will have ever played it before.

but yea sorry for your loss.

edit: Oh nevermind, we aren't suggesting songs.

But yea, just try and stay happy. That's the best I can think of.

Play Altitudes by Jason Becker instead. I bet everybody would cry if you did that.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

But don't ignore your emotions, tap into them. The most emotional performances are always the best.

I also reccomend "Don't Fear the Reaper" if you can fit it in there. It's your grandpa. You have every right to cry during a show. You ARE human. I'll bet everyone else is gonna tear up... As long as you still play well, you can cry however much you like. If you really don't wanna cry... Take Firebread's advice I guess... Or stuff your tearducts with marshmallows for teh lulz.

Quote by Green Day Lyrics
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time

It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth it was worth all the while

It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

What's with the face palm? Those are great lyrics.

Play Good Riddance by Green Day. It's pretty simple

Good Riddance..?
At a funeral?

Maybe not.

And thanks everyone for your support and advice.

Sorry to hear your loss buddy.
I was shattered when I heard about my grandad.
I reckon "Last Goodbye- Jeff Buckley" would be sweet.

Take care of yourself (Y)

EDIT: About the emotions part, I found it very hard to stay together during the funeral but if I were playing guitar for him (he never heard me play) i'd just keep the thought "it's for him" and he'd want you to be happy while playing, play in his honor. So keep your head up for him and have some fun for him.

Yes, and also a huge "Fuck You!" song in disguise. I mean, come on who's gonna play a song entitled 'Good Riddance' at a funeral

It's likely the audience won't know the name of the song. Just don't tell them the name. The lyrics are great for the circumstances.

Or you could just say the song is called "Time of Your Life."

That would work.

This may be cliché, but Hallelujah?

"Turn Turn Turn" by the byrds is a good funeral song, i've always thought.
Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the cake this morning!

yeah, that's an inside joke. i made it different colors and sizes to be obnoxious...

I was in the same position you were in in July. I dealt with it thinking of it like this. You are there to celebrate the life of an extraordinary man. Play the song for him knowing that wherever he is, he's listening. Forget about everyone else and you know what, if you have to take a break due to crying or something, do it. Its not like this is a concert, it's just a tribute. If you were to shed a tear or something while playing, i bet your grandpa wouldn't think anything of it. Just don't stress. you aren't playing for everyone else, you are playing for that one person.

Im so sorry for your loss man. If you have it together, play something like For the Love of God, if you can that is. Beatiful song. Or better yet, wishful thinking by john petrucci, both very beautiful, no singing needed.

Sorry to hear that. But do you have to play a song? I understand your intentions but its very easy to misconstrue. It shifts the attention to you. I don't know, it sounds off to me.
