hey is it really necessary to hold my pick between my index and thumb and have the remaining finger stretched out??

i have always held it between my index and thumb but with the other finger not stretched...kinda like clapton does it

but i was told to stretch the other fingers in order to maximize speed.....is this true??

thanx

I agree.
Whatever feels comfortable.
And I don't really see how keeping them out would maximize speed. It's just more energy and all wasted.
I keep my fingers relaxed, but the only thing is, sometimes when I play too agressively, I nick my ring finger on the strings and it gets a little cut up.
But it's not a problem.
