In a chord progression of Em-C-G-D, in what context could I use Add9 chords?
Funny words.

Well, you could use it as a build up sort of thingy starting over into the Em, putting an Add9 chord just before the Em would add a little perk when entering the progression again.

Since none of those chords have a modified 9th, you could make any of them an add9.

^ ahhhh i see now. you didn't put Aadd9, you just caps'ed it.

yes make all of them add9's and you'll get a kinda jazzy funky sound.

You can also do an inversion and play the 9th as the lowest pitch
so you can just bar it.

Play the E min as it is..

then just bar the 12th fret for the Gadd9 . add the root note with the pinky
or play the root on the lower E string or whatever options you come up with.

do the same for these chords.
slide it up to the 5th fret for the C
slide it down to 7th fret for the D

it just depends now you strum it and if you wanna write a little riff line
and stress the 9th note of each of the chords.

If you want to stay in key, any chord can have an added 9th except the iii or viidim in a major key or the iidim and v of a minor key. As for places it sounds good, the subdominant and dominant are fantastic.

9th chords=jazz and funk. And as it has been stated before me, any of those chords can be made into 9th chords.

9 and add9 are not the same and they're not used in the same scenario.

9 chords can be used in funk, but add9 chords are going to be used more in acoustic and fingerstyle music.

9=1 3 5 b7 9
add9=basic triad plus 9
