Yeah, so this is probably a really basic question, but I don't know the answer and hoped I could find one in the basic section.

I see some tabs with 3-note power chords (at least, I think they're power chords), but the middle string is muted (or denoted with an "x"). For every other tab I've seen, that requires a palm mute, but I can't palm mute one string and play the two around it, can I? What am I looking at?

its a dead note, mute it with you freting hand, hold your finger on it but not enough to sound the note, it should just make a dead sound.
Edit: these are known as octave chords, both notes played are the same on a different octave and are used alot in punk music.

Not a chord, it's just an interval.
