But lesbos is a literary reference point for homosexuality in women. Why would they campaign to get rid of that culture?

Well, until a couple of decades ago in America homosexuality was classed as a mental illness and homosexuals were put in mental hospitals.

What I don't get is why the island is so offended by homosexuality that it needs a court case brought against them.

surely it would be pronounced more like "les-boss" not "les-bo-s" so to speak...

The UK enforces the death penalty on some homosexuals. The Chavs are the enforcers.

It's not even necessary to say that, they could just call themselves 'greeks'.

No, what I mean is, if you're going to be offended by the name of your island, just use the umbrella term for the whole country.

They're not offended by the name of their island. They're offended by what OTHER people have chosen to use that name to describe.

But it's not like it's coincidence, it's derived from that name because of literature. Noone went 'oh, we need a word for gay women- just close your eyes and put your pin in the map'. They should be proud of it if anything.

that's fair enough, i don't refer to myself as a mistley-ian...mistleyan... essex girl, i just call myself british or english and have done with it

they could always say "i am from lesbos" instead of "i am lesbian", if they wanted to be more specific than "i'm a greek". the extra word doesn't really make that much difference, surely.

For the record :http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=lesbian
1591, from L. Lesbius, from Gk. lesbios "of Lesbos," Gk. island in northeastern Aegean Sea, home of Sappho, great lyric poet whose erotic and romantic verse embraced women as well as men, hence meaning "relating to homosexual relations between women" (1890; lesbianism in this sense is attested from 1870) and the noun, first recorded 1925. Slang variant lez, les is from 1929; lesbo first attested 1940. Before this, the principal fig. use (common in 17c.) was lesbian rule (1601) a mason's rule of lead, of a type used on Lesbos, which could be bent to fit the curves of a molding; hence, "pliant morality or judgment."

hang on a minute, the term "lesbian" has been around for years, why didn't they make a fuss when the term was first coined?

In fairness now to the people of Lesbos, they've been lesbians thousands of years longer than gay women.

...

Damn, that sounds weird.

They don't, I'm sure they've been aware of it for years, they just don't want the term 'lesbian' used in a Greek gay society.

they don't want to be rid of the culture, they want to be rid of that label for the culture as it has a detrimental effect on the reputation of the island.

instead of homosexual women calling themselves lesbians, why don't they just say that they themselves are homosexual?
