Yeah after researching a bit I realized it's just a controller for an external recording unit. Still cool though.. Les Paul is the man.

Well, not only is the recording unit external, it's also got pre-recorded loops in it. Listen to the timing on the first bit when he plays it himself and then compare it to the "Les Paulverizer recording". The timing's completely different.
