I'm heading off college in less than two months and I've been wondering a few things.

I was thinking what would be the best thing to do with my guitars and stuff. I'm worried about people stealing my ****, whether it be my roommate himself, one of his friends, or just some random guy who'll come in when I'm not there. I really want to be able to play in college but what would be the best thing to do.

I also bought a nice pair of studio headphones so I can plug them into my amp and not disturb anyone with noise, but they are expensive (I use them for audio stuff on my computer as well) and I'm afraid some dick will steal these too.

What are some of your experience with roommates and dorms?

Edit - I'm also worried about my roommate playing my guitar when I'm not around or letting his friends mess with it and totally screw it up.

Steal case?

I'm trying to look up if the cubboards/warbrobes have locks to them so I could just put it in there but I don't think so.

Theiving bastard picks up case. Walks off. Same result as if you'd left the guitar out, except you're minus a case + contents as well.

Thieving bastard can't open case. Gets frustrated. Takes case back to you. Cusses you out. You're confused. But have case nonetheless.

Buy one of those bike locks and lock it to something in the dorm that cant be stolen haha

I was just about to say that

Put it in the case, lock the case, and use a bike lock to lock it to something.

Based on my experience with dorms and roommates, you shouldn't bring anything to the dorm that you don't want your roommates touching.
It's not too hard to stop them physically, but you'll be labeled as a selfish/rich prick/showoff.
Just my two cents.
#12
Who cares if they think your paranoid, they'll know you takin care of your **** and keeping track taking names, lmao.

Case gets pissed off at being constantly moved around. Case gets up and leaves. TS and Thieving Bastard stare at case, unsure what to do.

Theiving bastard takes case back to wherever he lives, used tools to force case open/cut through padlock. Case opened, bastard +1 guitar.

Ok, if he wants it that bad than there's nothing you can do to stop him. I'm suggesting he makes it as inconvenient as possible.

i have a hardshell case that i have locked to a heat pipe in my dorm, bike lock or laptop lock works just fine.

bike lock it to something like a bed or a wardrobe or something...

Mine haven't been stolen yet. Only thing is if I leave my guitar out of my case, all my roommates and suitemates immediately place it out of tune, but other than that, i doubt your actual roommate would steal it, because it would be too easy just to blame him, especially if he's the thieving type, and you should just make sure to lock your door whenever you leave, regardless of whether or not you bring a guitar. I go to Albany where **** is stolen everyday, but I would be highly surprised if my guitar is ever stolen. Also make sure to write down the serial numbers of all the **** you bring up with you, because it'll make the police's job a lot easier if you decide to try and get them involved.
#18
Yeah I suppose I'll check my roomate out first and see the type of person he is and who he brings over.

The bike lock is a good idea, thanks.

But I can just see those certain few guitarist's with their vintage Gibsons coming and looking down at my old Squier. Oh well at least people will steal their guitars and not mine.

Well that's when YOU steal their guitar. We just flipped the tables on those dirty thieves!!

....now were gonna get another thread in here. "Someone stole my guitar."
#26
Nahh, being as this is The Pit it'd be more like

"Someone just walked into my room and ejaculated on my guitar while I was sitting right there"
#27
Then a thread called "I ejaculated on someguys guitar, and he threw me out the window."

and so on and so on.

If it gets stolen, then steal someone else's guitar.

people are so ridiculously protective of their guitars... particularly boys. I find it odd.
If you're that worried, bring a cheap one, and try not to get too emotionally attached to it this time.

Maybe I just got lucky, but my roommate this year and my roommate last year, both didn't mess with my stuff. Even my guitars. This year I had my Fender MIM Strat, my Schecter C-1 Classic, my Traynor YCV40WR, and my Yamaha FG750S all in my dorm room. Everything stayed there all the time, nobody messed with anything.

Better yet, bring a squier strat. That way if they steal it, it's a good thing

put it in a case, lock it, then chain and padlock the case to your bed (to a crossbar on the bed specifically)

Also invest in a small safe for your headphones (and documents, and cash) you probably won't be able to bolt it down, but very few people are going to bother with stealing something that hard to open.

If you're that worried, hide it.

But if there's one thing college has shown me, it's that EVERYONE and their mother at least has one guitar. Unless you have a super high-end model, it's not going to be of particular interest to anybody.

how much is 15,000 PHP? I didn't know they played guitar in the Phillipines. I thought they played ukelele or something.

Because, of course, we're too far away from places with guitars and all that stuff so we play ukelele...

Put guitar in case. Lock case.

Boom. Boom. Bang. Listen to this guy, please. I don't want a story about your poor self losing your most prized possesion. Oh, great creator of being, grant this kid the chance to forever hold onto his guitar, and me too. I really like mine too. DO NOT LET US LOSE OUR GUITARS!!!

Either get a lockable case and tie it down to something, or get a case that's so heavy that anyone who tries to grab it will not be able to lift it.

My Shergold case is roughly 3 1/2 stone...I'd love to see anyone run with my case.
#37
To be honest, it's not as likely to happen as people think before they start at uni. Serious thieves will just take ipods, jewellery and money rather than anything heavy and big. And you'll probably find there are plenty of people with much more expensive gear than yours in your halls anyway. Just get insurance and don't worry too much.
#38
If you really care that much about it being stolen, just get a hardshell case and lock it to something when you're not using it. Problem solved.
And bring a Marshall stack so nobody will attempt to take your amp.
#39
I like to think people in college are mature enough not steal other peopls stuff, unfortunatley this isn't true, but just stay on peoples good side and people will look out for you.
