what chords/progressions best suit alt-rock? should all songs be based around a chord progression or should they include a riff along side it? should i base my lyrics around whatever?

In my experience, alternative rock takes ideas from classic rock, punk, and pretty much anything you can think of and condenses it into individual songs with some experimentation. Don't try to lock yourself into a genre though, just write what you think sounds good.
