Hi people,

I just had my ban lifted, and I was wondering about a couple of things regarding bans.
First, is it possible to be banned permanently?
Second, is it possible to have a ban lifted if it isn't your first? (this only applies if permanent bans are possible, obviously)

In case the mods are watching, I don't intend on breaking the rules again; I just want to be a bit enlightened as to the nature of bans. Honest.

EDIT: I had a look in the FAQ section and found nothing on the nature of the subject.

Yes.

3 bans=permanent ban

There's some offenses that cause a permanent ban, like posting porn or gore.

Yeah, if you just spamming or arguing horribly you will probably just get a month ban. But if your really bad you can end up with a permanent ban. Porn would get you there. Insulting a mod might get you there. Doing something repeatedly would get you there. Spamming FOTB would get you there...

People make mistakes, the mods know that. Unless you do something really bad or its habitual you dont have anything to worry about.

Actually, I think it's 4 bans.

30 > 45 > 60 > perma.

Yes, The following is one of the paths to PermaBan:

Another way to Perma is to do something so egregious that the Mods ban you instantly and permanently. Also, if you make a second account, that one will be Perma'd and an additional ban will be served on your first account.

All things are possible, but some things are rarely or never done.

For normal users like you and me, the rules pretty much spell out the process. There might be some consideration to a user that contributed 1000 tabs or something, but in general, bans stay on your record and the 4th one is permanent.

Frenchy likes to bet, though. He She sometimes offers a chance to get your record wiped clean. But you risk spending time in the dungeon. Recently there was just such an opporunity: Grand National Sweepstake. Only 1 user walked away unscathed by that one. Nobody got the grand prize. A few single bans were erased. And everyone who played (save one), spent between 3 days and 2 weeks in the FotB. Good fun, anyway.

And occasionally there is the User Elimination thread.
Hopefully we'll see another one of those soon.

That's a good attitude. Try to keep that in mind when temptation draws you toward a bad decision. Or just always try to be polite and helpful.

In case this isn't too clear, there is an announcement at the top of The Pit: Rules! You'll find a more complete explanation of rules and consequences there. Be sure to refer to them periodically. You can't memorize them all at once.

Also, Read the Rules and the Stickied Threads at the top of each UG forum you visit, before posting there. Some of the Forums have vastly different rules than the general rules. This is necessary because those forums operate with different goals.

In general,
Be polite and helpful. And put some thought and intelligence into your posts. It goes a long way toward getting some consideration when a judgment call has to be made about a possible warning to you. It won't help when if you clearly break a rule, but if it could go either way, you might get the benefit of the doubt. I suspect this has at least some effect. After all, I haven't been perma'd yet, right?

Good luck,
SYK

Don't worry Manda.
Some day I'll mess up and you'll be there with the hammer and the final nail for the coffin, my darling.
