Are there a lot of amps that are compatible with both basses and guitars? If so what do I look for when they don't specify?
#2
Generally all amps are compatible with basses and guitars.

Good example is the Fender Bassman, it's a bass amp but a lot of guitarists use it.

You want a bass amp. Guitar through a bass amp is good, but bass through a guitar amp is bad.
#4
So then why are there bass only amps? For example, Peavey MAX 110 seems to be bass only

Bass amps can handle a guitar fairly well. A SS bass amp may not distort well, but it can handle it.

Guitar amps cannot handle bass frequencies at all.
