So today I was watching the movie "The Rock" and John McGinley, who plays Dr. Cox on Scrubs, plays one of the disgruntled Marines who takes over Alcatraz, and it made me say, "Interesting...."

What are some times when you see in actor in a role really different from when you're used to seeing them? I don't think actors should always play the same character or anything, but it always catches me a little off guard when roles are dramatically different. Also, does Steve Buscemi ever play anything other than the really eccentic guy in the group?

Well I can remember seeing Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in the theatres in '69, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Four years later in '73, I went to see Newman and Redford together again in The Sting and thinking - where are the outlaws? Those two were iconic dynamite together in Butch Cassidy as well as in The Sting, but the characters they played in each movie were completely different.

I also remember seeing Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones after seeing him as Han Solo, what a change.

Robin Williams in serious roles is is confusing but good.
I quite like Jim Carrey in serious roles too but plenty of people disagree with me :/

Oh ya! I remember you, you were spectacular as "Child from Bethlehem #3". I thought you were spot on when you walked in stage right. I don't recall you having many lines, but you really read them with passion.

Ashton kutcher in the Butterfly Effect, Ken Foree being in Kenan and Kel

When I saw Ashton Kutcher in the Butterfly Effect, I spent the entire film expecting him to suddenly turn around in the middle of something horrible and say "YOU'VE JUST BEEN PUNK'D!" and then everyone to just start laughing. It completely ruined the film.
I play by my own rules. And I have one rule; There are no rules... but if there are, they're there to be broken. Even this one.

Then I saw "Insomnia" and was shocked to see Robin Williams as a killer.

Robin Williams. I mean, the guy was a wife, killer, somebody from outerspace. You have to admit, he was pretty much everyone.

Edit: Woman.
McLovin is my hero!

Robin Williams surprised me as the dude from august rush who forced abandoned kids to be street performers. It was pretty crazy after seeing him in "dead poets society" and in "Good will hunting".

Also Will Ferrel was excellent in the movie "stranger than fiction".

Seeing Kurtwood Smith from that 70's show (the dad) was surprising when I saw him in dead poets society and that episode of house where his son was a piano prodigy.

paul newman in 'butch cassidy and the sundance kid' was TOTALLY different than the other movies i'd seen him in, like hud or cool hand luke, etc.

when I realized anthony hopkins was hrothgar in beowulf, i stomped a cat to death.

luckily, good ol' clint eastwood has never really gone out of his gritty character, allowing him to retain his position as the greatest actor to ever live.
