My solution:
buy a few picks. Get a chain necklace. Bust out the power drill.

PICK NECKLACES FTW!

I've made them from:

CDs, a mobile phone top-up card, 2p coins (i attacked it with a grinder to get it a better shape . . I thought it was pretty good really), wood, cardboard and DVD cases. It's pretty self explanatory. Cut and shape.

I recommend against CDs if you strum/pick quite hard. CDs are laminated and tend to split.

^if you're not in the UK/haven't been, it's currency......

So, like a penny or something.

And I"ve used old bank cards, fridge magnets, various woods, coins, and I've tried sandwiching a bunch of inch long bits of guitar strings between two broken wood picks I made, trying to replicate one of those jellyfish picks...

Coins, papers, paper money, socks, hotel cards cut in the shape of picks, keys...

I go the Brian May route and use a quarter (though he uses a Spanish peso).
Brian May is famous for using old English sixepence pieces...
The Laney Thread are big and clever. No exceptions.

paper doesnt work too well i tried it on my acoustic with 13's on and it just shreded and wennt into the soundhole, that was not a fun 20 minutes after wards haha, i always think coins are ruining the strings though, try finding something with a similar texture to what a pick is made from and then using that, its logic

I believe it is Billy Gibbons who uses a peso.

Find a giftcard or something, trace a pick (that parts optional, just freehand it if you want), grab the scissors and cut it out, Then smooth the edges a little. They're thin, but they're free.
#22
I used to make some awesome picks at my last job.
We had all these black plastic tubs that I'd trace a pick onto and cut out.
It was just about the same thickness as the Dunlop 1.5mms that I use.
I had to cut it out with tin snips, then I used sandpaper to smooth out the jagged edges from cutting, then I took a real fine grit and finished it so it was super smooth.
Sometimes I'd even glue sandpaper to the top part for a grip.

You get a sock and wrap it around cardboard in the shape of a pick, it makes a pretty decent felt pick, but it costs you a sock. so just use the ones with holes in them, old boxers, pants, and shirts also work well. you could probably do the same thing only use tin foil instead of fabric for a different tone. (havent tried that, just thought of it.)

Billy Gibbons has been known to use both a quarter and a peso. Brian May prefers to use a sixpence piece.

Dude, just buy Dunlop player packs of picks. Everytime I go into/near a guitar shop, I buy three or four picks.. even if I don't need them.. then I put them all in a little bag. The result: after a few months, you have a ****load of picks. Hooray.

English coins are crap for playing with

Edit: I've used a credit card before.

Another particular choice of May is the plectrum: he uses an English Sixpence coin from the '60s. This gives a mysterious, clean and crystalline tone.
#26
Honestly, I never lose picks. I don't understand how people lose picks. Also, since I buy either Ultex or Red Bear picks, I never have a problem with wearing them down too fast.

I dunno . . . maybe you just need a system?
Sincerely, Chad.

I just put my pick between my first 3 strings.
Under the 1st and 3rd, over the 2nd.
Works like a charm.
But really, why don't you just go buy some? They're not that expensive. But all other ideas like credit cards, cds, dvd cases are all good.

I used a flat head screw driver before... got alot of crap for my picking hand being so far away from the guitar.. but it got me through the song with out a problem.

I once folded up the cardboard from a pack of gum, and used that.

In the past I've used plastic forks, and torn off zippers.

I find that the best thing to use is some sort of cut-out plastic.
