so I didn't find exactly what I was looking for with the search bar... but what are some chord progressions that really catch your attention and draw you more into a song? Here's one of mine (after having played in the key of C for some time): C - E7 - Am - Am/G# - Am/G - Am/F#

That E7 chord really grabs my attention and the minor chord with the descending bass note just sound sick until it resolves back into the root chord later.

i like to include the minor sixth out of sequence, that sort of stuff always grabs my attention. especially (in E minor), something like... Em, G, Em, Am, G, C, Am, Bm, D.... it's cool if you use different chord shapes than the usual barre chords or power chords, throw in some sus2s and sus4s in there or really whatever you want, if you haven't already, buy a chord dictionary and just experiment around with unusual chords, that'll make you stand out. even the easiest chord progression can be turned into an awesome riff or song in general. I like what you're doing with the bass notes, use a couple well placed chromatic bass notes to add tension and then use a Seventh chord to give the release.

I'm not sure if this help what-so-ever. but, the golden rule is to just keep on playing and relax and it'll come out of you when you're ready. Don't rely on what's been done to create, everyone uses the blues chord progression, it still has an effect if YOU come up with some cool with it.

also, if you really want a point of reference, just look up tabs of songs that you like and just check up the sort of stuff their doing.

maybe the Coltrane changes would work? ii-V-IV?

Good Luck and Keep on Rockin'!

There was this song in the movie 21 that used the hey joe chord progression, but never went to E. It basically looped C, G, D, A, over and over, and for some reason it was mesmerizing.

after looking at this thread, I started messin around with some basic stuff. this sounded kinda cool.

A - C#m - D - Dm - A - E - D - A

pretty standard but it was the first Major to Minor (with the same root) switch I've ever made sound good.

Any chord progression where you think you can guess the 4th chord to come but then it's completely different and unexpected and off-key.

So basically a lot of prog rock... and Opeth.

Try playing:

Em D Am Am
Em D Am open F#m

A minor, I believe.

Nope. A Minor doesn't have an E major chord in its key. In fact, there can only be three diatonic major chords in any key.

The G# sharp can be an accidental, can't it?

EDIT: Is there even a key that includes all of those?

No. They are not all diatonic chords, the E major would be a non-diatonic chord but the key is still most likely going to be Am or C, though Am is functioning seems to be functioning as the I.
