A while back i ask the fine members of the UG comunity to evaluate some designs for a guitar as part of my A2 level DT project. Well i'm back and i'm pleased to say i;ve finished the guitar and am on the final stretch of the project. Here it is!:

If you want to here an example of the sound it produces then that is the track "Fall To Sleep", the 1st track here:

As part of the client evaluations I would like to ask, if you have the time, whether you could fill in the following:

the wood looks nice.

it looks very amateur, the pickup placement looks very un-symmetrical and amateur. the bridge should be near the bridge, etc. your round-over doesnt look constant, it looks like you didnt finish sand it very well.

as for the way it sounds, it sounds like a perfect instrument, of course, you can make almost anytihng sound good as long as its got a good pickup, wood, and a player.

1. Colour -8/10. like the natural finish.
2. Shape -6/10. looks like you hacked a chunk out of a somewhat-decent looking guitar.
3. Overall Look - 7/10. Overall, pretty nice looking.

Comments on Visual Impression:

1. What would you say you liked in particular? -
I like the wood grain, and the finish.

2. What would you say you didn't like in particular? -
I don't particularly like the shape. the bridge pickup should also be closer to the bridge.

3. What would you say i should change if i did it again? -
I'd say you should make the lower bout cutaway a bit smaller, but keep it about the same.

Comments on Visual Impression:

1. What would you say you liked in particular? -
It looks very well made, you obviously put a lot of careful work into it.

2. What would you say you didn't like in particular? -
Although the shape is very original, I don't really like it. Hence the low scores on the rating.

3. What would you say i should change if i did it agen? -
Buff the finish, it will look far better if it is slightly more shiny. It looks a bit lifeless right now. Perhaps a deeper belly cut? It looks a bit small, but that may just be me.

Comments on Auditory Impression:

1. What would you say you liked in particular? -
Some of the clean tone, and the lead tone

2. What would you say you didn't like in particular? -
Some of the the rhythm parts, I bet it is more because of the recording than the guitar though.

Hope that helps!

Not a lot of time to review each little thing, but overall... nice job.

I love the wood. The carving or bending you did looks great. The shape is OK... original, but sometimes original is not so good in the guitar world. It still looks like a nice guitar to play... like it would sit in your lap well for chilling out and jamming.

The bridge pickup location is odd.

Fit and finish looks great. Nice handy work.
All my photobucket pics are dead so no links to my guitar build threads.

Nah it was A2 i'm afraid. They usually don't let you take on such ambitious project at AS, but there's no harm in waiting. As for if your "allowed" or not goes it's entirly dependant on the course. I'm lucky in that at my school we're allowed to essentially make up a brief but other courses and other schools might be less leaniant.

i think it would have looked alot nice if you had'nt done the cutaway on the bottem right hand corner but thats opinion bridge pickup well its more like a middle pickup i love the colour did you stain it? and the sound its good

Not so sure about the headstock.

3. What would you say i should change if i did it agen? -
Maybe match the headstock colour to the body and make sure the pups are centered.

Clean isn't how I like it, but this is all subjective anyway and also highly based on your amp.

I love the wood grain look, very mellow looking.

2. What would you say you didn't like in particular? -
The Neck

3. What would you say i should change if i did it agen? -
What destroys the potential beauty of this guitar is the bolt un-matching neck. This guitar could have been much more if you'd made it a through...maybe 3 peice neck. It leaves alot to be desired. Also the bridge pickup seems a little far away from the bridge.

Comments on Auditory Impression:

When it comes to the sound you guitar gives, it is more about the pickups and the amp, not about the guitar. I'm a firm believer in the wood that an electric guitar is made out of, doesnt make THAT much difference in you sound. It's mostly about your amp, then pickups, then a very very tiny bit about the wood.

So Kudos on your amp and pickups

The bridge pickup location and the headstock.

I didnt listen to it but here you are.
Visual Impressions (?/10):

1. Colour - cool, but a stained black or white would have been good
2. Shape - that shape is damn cool. No LP rip for you, no sir lol
3. Overall Look - I'd take that on stage with pride.

Comments on Visual Impression:

1. What would you say you liked in particular? - the shape and fret reach.

2. What would you say you didn't like in particular? - headstock (standard I know, but i really dont like fender headstocks.)

3. What would you say i should change if i did it agen? - lower the neck into its join a little more, maybe make a carved top and put some binding on it, and also, get some silver pickup rings on it, to match the hardware, and some pickup covers, if you so desire.

I'm sure it sounds awsome well done
I can do no wrong, for I do not know what wrong is.

Comments on Visual Impression:

1. What would you say you liked in particular? -
I like the originality of the body shape, not nessecarily the shape itself, but i like that you did a completely original design.

2. What would you say you didn't like in particular? -
The overall look doesn't really flow to me - the treble horn doesn't seem to fit the bass horn stylistically, but i like the cutaway by the controls.

3. What would you say i should change if i did it agen? -
Tie the different ideas together a bit better - maybe shape the bass horn to match the treble a bit closer

Comments on Auditory Impression:

1. What would you say you liked in particular? -
I love the cleans - plenty of sustain, sounds as good as any les paul type i've heard
good mix of lows mids and highs, nothing overpowers anything else.

2. What would you say you didn't like in particular? -
the distorted tones sounded very generic - could just be the pedal/amp combo, but it didn't hit me as anything special.
#23
Visual Impressions:

1. Colour - 8/10
2. Shape - 7/10
3. Overall Look - 6/10

Average - 7/10

1. What would you say you liked in particular? - The finish is nice and a one piece body (Unless I'm missing the seam) is always nice.

2. What would you say you didn't like in particular? - The shape isn't really for me, and the overall appearance is unfortunately but obviously hampered by the shape. The Fender style headstock doesn't really work for me either. A guitar of this nature, IMHO, needs either a 3x3, 4x2 or 2x4 style headstock.

3. What would you say i should change if i did it agen? - The back end needs to come in a bit. The guitar looks too long and this is accentuated because of the pickup placement.

Auditory Impressions:

No audio for me unfortunately (No speakers at work). I can only assume for the moment that the differentiation between neck and bridge pickups is minimal. The bridge pickup needs to move back quite a bit, by eye I'd say at least 5/8". This will give it a more distinct voice and probably rein in the overly long appearance of the guitar.
