So I'm looking to upgrade from my crappy walmart mp3 player to something with alot more storage. I hear that iPods are overrated and overpriced, but what product is comparable to them? Basically, what does UG use as a portable music device?
#2
If you're asking UG, you will get mainly 2 answers.

Zen

Ipods.

Take your pick.

Definitely don't get an ipod, they're very easy to break and have bad sound quality, as well as having below-average battery life and hefty price tags. Aside from the image, there's no practical reason to get one.

I hear Zen's are good, and from what I've seen, all the specs are generally better than average, the only beef I have with them is that the battery life is a bit low. Mind you, just about all mp3 players have crappy battery lives when you compare them to old CD walkmans, etc.

Creative Zen.

The big screen, but no color screen. That battery will last for a week straight.
Mine is 20 GB.

One is using a hard disk drive, which is very cheap.

The 32gb is using SSD (solid state drive) which means no moving parts.

SSD will always be more expensive than HDD

The new zens claim 25 hours audio battery life, 4 hours video.

I personally have had 4 ipods and each one of them just stopped charging one day. I kept them in immaculate condition and then just randomly stopped working. Take it from me, unless Satan himself was trying to just piss me off, Ipods just suck in general - I had a first generation 5 gig, a first generation nano 4 gig, a first generation shuffle, and a second generation shuffle. Haha, for a second it seemed like only the firstborns were supposed to die for some reason but instead everyone did.

Looks like Satan is trying to piss you off.

I know loads of people with ipods, and a while back did a poll with everyone I could find.

The large majority never had issues.

i say get an older ipod, ive had my ipod mini for 5 years now, im probably gonna get a classic soon because i badly need the extra room, a thousand songs is a fair bit just not enough for me

the zens are cool and small, i just prefer the simplicity of an ipod and the sound quality is better, and its nice having a metal ipod for there rugeddness, ive dropped mine dozens of times and its still battling on

That's not particularly impressive. I had a Sony Walkman that was 20 gigs and it could get 30 hours playback off a single charge, and it could even get up to 40 hours playback if the music was in the player's native format (which was actually quite good). I consider that to be good.

I got an Ipod video 30gb when they first came out. What was that 3-4 years ago. idk. Ive never had a problem w/ it.

Thats not true about the sound quality. Ipod sound quality is actually poor for the price. I've had 3 creative players all of which were great and only got replaced because I needed more room, I still use my oldest one as a portable HD, my dad uses the 2nd one and my vision M is still running fine.

On the other hand all my friends who have had Ipods have had them die on them. One in as little as 8 months.

better than 8-16 hours on an Ipod.

Yeah, I just got VERY confused..

As for the whole ipods dying and zens being used for backups and whatnot?

I've heard the exact same thing, only the other way around. They're both great, and I'm not going to tear one down.

I have heard of of both being used as backups. The difference is that when I hear of a non-ipod backup used to replace an ipod, it's the last time I hear of any mp3 player problems. When I hear of an ipod being used as a backup for a different mp3 player, existing frustration multiplies after relatively short periods.

The metal backs on ipods are not that sturdy anyway, and they only allow protection for an area of the unit that is often not the first part to sustain damage.
