is his sound a distortion or a overdrive and what pedal(s) would work nice for that sound
#2
Well his distortion if from his amp. So I need to ask you, what gear do you have? What guitar? What amp? What pedals?

Nugent is old school doubt he uses much in the way of effects. His way would just crank the amp and play hard.

Yup, I thought it might've been Scott Ian's amp when I first saw it, but he was using another amp.

Scott Ian uses Randalls if I'm not mistaken, and yeah I think I heard once that Nuge used like 4 cranked Twin Reverbs.

Yeah, that kind of a signature part of his sound, most of the time.
He's really partial to his Byrdland, but I've seen him pull out all sorts of other guitars.
Even solidbodies, like his LP. But I suspect that might be heavily chambered.

Symmetrical distortion from a push-pull output stage is obvious in most of the tones he uses.
And he's never shy about getting up-close and personal with the speakers to finesse some resonant feedback.
