I am really looking into the g400 custom and the prophecy ex. But i might be over looking a great guitar or not seeing something in these or one of the others. So i would just like to know what is good and bad about the epi sgs. And which one is probably the best.

the prophecy plays amazing, and doesnt have that gay pickguard, and you can choose from EMGs or Gibson pups.

i especially like the fact that it has a QM body and a extra thin satin finished set in neck.

SG Elitist anyone?

I hear most people say the G-400.

But I will also advocate the "get out there and get your hands on every variety you can" route. You may find that you like a "lower" model better.

well, the g-400 is the most common "good" epiphone SG.

personally, if you can afford it I would recommend an elitist. I myself play a limited made in japan 61 reissue and its butter.

Those aren't made any more.

I think that limited G-400 was the best. All the usual G-400 stuff but with the nice full pickguard and a proper cherry finish.
After that I'd say the other limited edition white G-400. Just looked awesome.
I don't think any of the others are worth bothering with. The new EX and GX ones come with nice stock pickups but they look pretty lame and 24 frets means you're losing tone on the neck pickup, and I can't stand thin necks or the extra big fret wire. The Deluxe looks weird (flame maple is great on Les Pauls but nothing else), the Custom is a pointless downgrade (middle pickups are hugely overrated and I find it limites me more, I would rather not have a middle pickup than have one), and the double neck seems nice but it's such a specialised instrument and so different from the others you can't really count it. The G-310 is okay except it's effectively just an HH Strat without a tremolo, and the Special is sheer crap.
Yes, I know everything. No, I can't play worth a damn.

Ok i pretty much already have it narrowed down to the faded g400, g400 custom, and the prophecy ex. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of these guitars? Like pickups and action?

G-400 custom has the middle pickup which is pointless. The EX has EMG's, which you may not like (if you don't, go for a Prophecy GX, it has dirty fingers pickups). The Faded has a thinner and duller finish, which you may or may not like. Epi Pickups are really muddy with distortion, so you may want to change them.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

If you can find one, the MIJ Epi SG '61 RIs ... same neck profile, headstock shape. and PUs as the Gibson, hardware-swappable with Gibson, too.

Ok some ppl say epi pups suck. Therefor it seems to me the prophecy would be great since it has emgs. Oh and i dont like the color and all of the gx. But some ppl say the emgs are not good 4 clean. And that they sound different when the battery has been in only 4 a few hours.
