It helps with improvisation over a riff. Free backing tracks are found at http://guitarbt.com/ which provides jam tracks and hundreds of backing tracks for your favorite songs.

They help the most if you're in a band and need to write a solo.

Since apparently you like AC/DC, you should learn the pentatonic scale (Angus uses it a ton). It's also known as the blues scale.
